Diary of Grandma's Internet Entrepreneur Journey

When I was growing up in a conventional Japanese family, where my mother's favourate phrase was to 'be proper', I rebelled against this idea. To this date, I dislike this phrase.

What does 'being proper' mean anyway?

In my mother's world, it was to behave in an acceptable manner. Oh, bless her.

I don't recall her ever telling me the definition, but I interpreted it as; going to a university, getting married, being a good wife and a mother. I don't really recall her encouraging me to have my on career or being financially independent.

But I was an ambitious youth and wanted success of my own making but did not receive an adequate guidance in career or business.

I have struggled with this conflicting ideas for years. A part of me wanting to dedicate myself to my man and my children and to be a good homemaker. The other part was always seeking some kind of accomplishment outside the domestic life.

I've ended up not accomplishing much for myself until now.

Now in my fifties and a grandmother of two, after three children and two marriages, instead of sitting in my arm chair knitting a bonnet for my daughter's newly born, I am starting an internet business.

I had been trying to make money online and lost some money trying in the last couple of years. I knew I wanted to run my own business, but the main obstacle in my mind might have been that conflict in my mind again, hearing my mother's voice, 'keep the proper job'.

Since joining this community, I have changed my mindset. I AM being proper.

I am running my own 'proper' internet business 'properly'.
