As bloggers we are always on the hunt for generating more traffic to our blogs, but how can we do it in a way that generates traffic in large numbers?

The Crack Filling Method

Step 1: Get the right idea for your blog post.

The goal here is to get the right kind of idea for your blog post.

There are a large number of bloggers who find difficulty in generating ideas that really lead to content people are searching for on Google.

So I'm going to explore some examples for you in order to get you started on finding the right kinds of content ideas that lead to increased traffic to your website.

If your content is filling "specific needs" it doesn't matter how broad your Niche selection is.

You could be a blog writing about cooking for example.

Even though there are thousands of blogs that write on the topic of cooking, you can still write content that serves peoples "specific needs" which will make your content stand out.

So how can you standout in a Niche as General as "Cooking" and be ranked on page 1?

If you were to search for just "cooking" in Google, there would be so many authority sites ranking for that term it would be nearly impossible for your blog to rank for that keyword.

However.

If you write about a term such as "Turkish Food" that still is too broad a term and will be way too competitive. Your going to get crushed by the shear weight of the competition.

This is where "specific need" targeted keyword narrow down your content even further to something like "eating at a turkish restaraunt with a yoghurt allergy".

This is a term you would have a chance to rank for due to its specificity.

Bingo! you've found a crack in the industry that needs filling and meets step 1 of the requirements for the Crack Filling Method.

Step 2Competition analysis

Input you're identified search term into Google and be on the look out for what kinds of results are shown on the first page of results.

Low quality is what we are looking for here. Low quality meaning, forum posts, tiny little no name sites, and especially results that are not matching the exact search terms.

Mismatched results could be for example "eating at an italian restaraunt with a yoghurt allergy"

or

"eating at an indian restaraunt with a yoghurt allergy" which are similar to our search term but not an exact match.

These kinds of results are clarification that there is low enough competition for you to rank high in Google and provide better content than what Google is showing for your search term.

Now we need to make sure that our topic has not just low enough compeition for us to rank for, but more importantly is there a high enough number of searches for this search term to generate traffic to your blog.

Niching down your content too far can damage your hopes of traffic ever reaching your site in the first place. People need to be searching for an answer that your content can provide in Google.

If there is a small amount of searches for the topic you have selected, you are wasting hours writing content you think will drive traffic but in reality is hurting your efforts to generate more traffic to your website.

this is where the a free tactic comes into play to make sure there are enough searches for you topic, its named the Alphabet Soup Method.

The Alphabet Soup Method

Visit Google and enter your basic keywords into the search bar. For example "eating at a turkish restaraunt with a ...."

Google then brings up their auto suggestions for those specific keywords.

If you start to type your keyword and google gives you an autofill matching the complete topic name you came up with, in this case "eating at a turkish restaraunt with a yoghurt allergy" it is a big validation that large amounts of people are searching this exact term.

google auto suggest > confirmation your topic has traffic > your on the right track!

A great rule of thumb here to make this process black and white is:

"if there is no autofill, don't write it"...

some keyword tools under deliver in their metrics for search terms you're targeting, lagging behind Googles autosuggest feature and the data it collects.

Instead of relying completely on keyword tools to feed you the write information there is a 3 step filtering process that has proven to be more trustworthy in guiding you towards the traffic generating content.

The first step was thinking of the right topic to write about.

The second step was the Alphabet soup method to ensure search volume was there and to judge the competition.

The third step is a visual representation of wether or not the keyword will be searched for in Google.

Its named the inverted pyramid.

Inverted Pyramid Technique

Think of the main Niche I mentioned before "cooking" as the base of the pyramid, what we are going to do is invert that broad niche on its head and funnel it down to a "specific need", but not to far down, remember we are targeting terms people are actually searching for.

This second step of the inverted pyramid process is to think about how far down into the niche does this topic go.

The "point" of the pyramid representing a topic that is WAY to specific having little to no searches and the "base" of the pyramid having too high a number of searches and competition.

We want to find the sweet spot somewhere in the middle, high searches but a topic that serves a "specific need".

Thinking about it in this way brings us one step closer to identifying the right idea to write our traffic generating blog post.

Step 4 Fill the Crack

This is where you will write content that fills the crack you have identified in your niche.

The best way to design a plan for this content is to refer back to the search results on Google.

Read the forum posts and look for questions people are having around your topic and do your best to structure your content around answering those questions.

If you can deliver quality answers in your content to the questions people have on forums like Quora and Reddit, Google will reward you with ranking your site on the first page of those search results due to that content being the highest quality answer it can produce for any user searching your topic.

At the end of the day, Googles main goal for its users, is to provide the best possible answers to their questions from reliable sources that have the highest probabilyt of providing them with accurate information relative to their search.

To condense this last step, let the number 1 search engine ranked page (SERP) for your topic become the map for which you can write your content.

Conclusion:

Follow this 4 step process to write content that is sure to generate more traffic to your blog.

Make sure it tickets the following boxes:

- topic is not too broad (base of pyramid, too much competition)

- topic is not too focused (pointy end of pyramid, not enough searches)

- Comes up as an auto suggest in Google (Bingo!)

- Passes the inverted pyramid test (find that sweet spot)

- Answers questions to peoples queries (usually found on forums like Reddit and Quora)

- Can out rank low quality results in Googles Search Rank Results (forum posts, little sites with no authority, mismatched results)

If you can implement this process for every blog post you write from this point forward you are well on your way to generating thousands of traffic to your website. It's one thing to read this post, but to use it in application means you have taken action on what you have learned.

Let me know in the comments the next time you write a blog post that best serves your audience by implementing any of the steps above to ensure it has the best chance possible of driving more traffic to your site!

Mark

Outstanding job. Thanks for sharing!

Ok so this may be a silly question as I am still new to WA... it seems that it is important to write blog posts to generate more traffic to your site....however I have read that it is a no no to write a blog post like the one you just did that is promoting any product or your website. How do you blog here (or are you talking about creating a blog somewhere else) correctly without violating the blog rules?

Hi,

This post was written to try add benefit to people who write blog posts that want to generate traffic to their websites.

There are no links to affiliate products within the post.

Nor are there links to my website or any product I am promoting.

I only wished to relay some information that could be useful to other members of Wealthy Affilliate community.

Has this answered your questions? :-)

-Will

No. So actually I found your blog post to be quite wonderful and informative. I realize you are not promoting anything on your website but my question is: How do you encourage traffic to your website using your useful tips when you are not supposed to promote anything? I am just curious because my website is about oral health and I want to help everyone improve their oral health. I had no reference to my website but received a comment saying “this information would be better saved for your website”. If I followed the rules about blogging am I supposed to talk about something unrelated?

Blogging here on WA is about your business. Like what he did in this blog post to help others with search engine stuff. You can blog here about blogging, basically.

Your website is where you want to blog about your niche. If you blog about it here AND your website, you're creating duplicate content that Google hates. Plus your website is where you want people to get your product recommendations.

Does that help?

Here on WA we discuss business only, no promotions. Your niche topics belong on your site.

Yes this helps. Now I fully understand. Thank you!

Your welcome. :)
