The Attention Economy

Hi WA Friends,

Recently, I was reading an article that I thought might be worth sharing. It had to do with reclaiming ours and our children’s attention spans.

Being that most of us probably use different social media platforms to market our websites, it drove home another side of this technology that is so ever-present but rarely gets attention (pardon the pun).

It has to do with the fact that tech companies view our attention as a commodity. In other words, if you’re not paying for something, you ARE the product.

We often think that we are in control of our own lives, but one could argue that we are not any longer…at least if you are online or on social media.

It’s staggering to see the statistics of how much time people spend on social media platforms on average. It is addictive and a necessary tool to promote business.

Handing your attention over to these companies is driving an enormously prosperous business model and driving shareholder value into the stratosphere. But at what cost?

Attention is a limited resource. Because tech companies know this, they have developed crafty measures to ensure they gain as much of it as possible. By grabbing more of your attention, they can sell it to advertisers. But, they can also sell it to organizations or entities that want you to do or think something in particular.

The Attention Economy

This business of viewing human attention as a scarce commodity to be sold to the highest bidder is sometimes called the “attention economy.”

And every social media app is a race to grab as much of yours and your children’s as possible. Getting people hooked is the goal. And children may be the viewed as their most valuable “product.”

But if you look around, you see more and more people constantly distracted by their phones and apps.

Designed to be addictive, those apps grab your attention via push notifications, unpredictability and variable rewards. The dopamine hit drives behavior to just have more. How many times have you been with someone who must check their phones the absolute second they hear a ping or feel a vibration?

Clever algorithms, recommendations and infinite scrolls just add to the magic of playing with your attention. This massive driver for social media has shown that young children are more depressed, lonely and disconnected than ever.

Final Thoughts

If you haven’t seen The Social Dilemma, you may want to…especially if you have children. It really breaks down how all this is designed to control our attention spans and influence behavior.

In the long run, more time needs to be considered as to the long-term effects of where this is going and how we as humans, want to spend our attention.

Just put down that phone and have a real one-on-one conversation for a change. You may be surprised at the uplifting benefits!

Enjoy the rest of your day!

We are chained to our technology. I am dating myself here, but we were a much more in-person social society than the current technology generations. We were not frozen to our screens and had an attention span longer than a nanosecond. I hate conversing with someone who has to stop what they are doing to check their phone. I will often walk off because I don't have the time to continue if you can't have the courtesy to focus on our conversation.

Technology is essential, and I can't imagine life without it now. However, the control we give these companies is, in my opinion, one of the worst things we could do.

Nancy

Very well said, Nancy. I agree with your assessments. Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment. Enjoy your day.

Great post, Susan. This is so true on so many levels. Too much social media can sometimes be a real drag and will always be a problem.

Myra ♥️

You said it…thanks Myra! Hope you have a great weekend.
Susan 👍🏻😎

Great to hear from you again Susan and I hope that all is as well as it can be now....

In my opinion SM is killing off proper interaction between children these days....

I don't have kids of my own but... from spending time with teenage nieces and nephews recently, all they do all day is connect with so called friends on SM and have no actual personal interaction with them!!

Backstabbing, insulting certain other friends and just being cruel whilst hiding behind a device seems to be the norm these days!

I certainly prefer the times we grew up in!

Maybe that is me just feeling my age.... but things were much simpler back then before all of this new technology so I can't judge too much!!

Enjoy your weekend as well dear friend and catch up again soon ok!!

👍🤗🥂

Always nice to hear from you, dear friend. I appreciate your thoughts and agree with your sentiments. All of this tech is doing a number on society and it’s really sad to see the toll on the kids. The lack of true connection and real friendship is sorely missing. Yes, we grew up in much simpler times.

Hope you are well…enjoy the start to Frisatsu and take care!
🤗🥂👍🏻

Excellent post, Susan, and so true!
👍👍😎

A huge part of my world is on my phone and I get push notifications all day regarding new articles and videos from various musical sites.

It’s the same with all the medical and engineering sites I belong to, but I can easily resist looking at them immediately. Lol

Many of them are on FB, IG, X, and other social channels.

Haha, they have me in a digital musical Skinner box of sorts! It really is addictive! 😵‍💫

Not the best experience for children, in my opinion.

Rock On! 🤘

Hi Frank! Thanks very much. Glad you enjoyed the post. It is difficult in this day and age to not get swept away in the tsunami but important to consider the implications, especially our youth as they are the future.

Of course, as you say, some notifications are easier to ignore than others lol!

Have a great evening. Rock On!
Susan 🎸🤘😎

You, too, Susan! 😎🍸
