Case Study: Can You Monetize a Single Website Multiple Ways?
The answer to that question is a big YES, but its also a nuanced topic because more monetization options does not = better results. In this short vlog I want to showcase my personal travel site that monetizes a few ways:
1) Affiliate marketing (Travelpayouts, Amazon Associates, REI)
2) Display ads on the page (Mediavine)
There are earnings that come from both these options and the second one (display ads) is so far way better in terms of profits. Moving forward, I am also considering removing/adding others to test out what performs better for overall profits but the main point is that when a website has traffic, it also has more options for monetizating that traffic too. Ultimately you will want to test different options for your specific site to determine what's best. In some cases, one single promotion on a website is better than multiple and other times, it's vice versa.

One thing that always baffles me is seeing ads for random things that have nothing to do with the website I’m on. For example, I am looking at a website to do with gardening and ads for car mats pops up. I instantly come off that website as I hate ads but, I hate ads that aren’t relevant even more!
Now, if it was pertinent to the subject matter then that would encourage me to stay on and continue reading the article, although I would still detest the fact that I have to see ads!!
I guess the question is, does mediavine make the ads relevant to the niche?
Also, how much traffic do you need to be generating for mediavine to accept you?
Thanks for the info
25,000 sessions a month is the norm I believe for Mediavine to accept your site. As for ads they can be instrusive for some people but ultimately we are trying to make money and I have personally noticed that running ads on my site, even irrelevant plays very little if any negative role on my visitor stay times.
Good to know! There are some sites that have ads all over the place and you can’t even read the content. It’s very annoying!!
Are the ads on your site relevant to the content you are writing or the theme of the website or are they random?
Honestly I don't control the kinds of ads that show up on my site, that's up to Mediavine and most of the time they are not relevant to my site's content.
What I can control is the quantity of ads that show up on the site and that is a delicate balance that you have to experiment with to see if you're running too many ads which affects the visitor's duration on your pages or not.
Right now I can tell you that it's working and sure there's likely people who don't like the ads, but I'm running a business and in the vast majority of cases, I don't see that most people even care they're there :)
Fair play and if the moneys rolling in what’s a few ads between friends!!
I tried google ads on an old site and they were just awful! I have heard that mediavine are one of the best companies for ad placements and pay much better than Google do!
Right, I’m off to get my sessions up to 25k!!
So to be clear I think you're talking about Google Adsense. That places ads on your site. Google ads is when you make ads to show up on the Google search engine.
But yeah you're right, mediavine is great for ad placement and so far it's my top recommendation for that specific way of monetizing :)
Yep, Adsense is the one. Pay was extremely poor and it was pretty hard to get ads placed where you wanted them.
I’m sure they are better now but really didn’t like it when I had them on my site. Had to turn them off!!
I’ll definitely give mediavine a try once I reach the magic numbers! Got to use everything you can to make the $$$’s
Honestly it's been a long time since I've heard anything good about Adsense. I've been happy with Mediavine for years :)
Hey Vitaliy,
I was actually waiting on Mediavine approval when this vlog popped up at perfect timing. If it goes through, that'll make four programs on my main niche site: Amazon, Jackery, my KDP books, and now hopefully Mediavine.
AdSense never worked out for me, just constant shutdowns, so hearing Mediavine's working for you definitely takes the pressure off applying.
Also trying to get into the Amazon Influencer Program, but it’s been glitchy linking to my Instagram.
Appreciate you sharing this, it always seems to hit right when I need it.
Shawn
Great to hear about Mediavine Shawn and they've been good to me for years. Hope the Amazon influencer thing works out too!
Thanks, I’m confident it’ll all come together in time. Things are starting to line up, and seeing this vlog really has me looking forward to what’s ahead so thank you for sharing that.
