Caution: This Post May Change The Way You See Copywriting

Its' been a four week roller coaster ride! A lot was accomplished, but I wish I could have done more...and I will - soon!

I'm feeling pumped about being back at WA. Seems like I've gotten more accomplished in the past few weeks, than the prior few years. Here's whats new:

It happened while I was in the process of writing a new article. You know how mundane doing research can be, but every now and then you may run across something realy interesting that grabs your attention and takes you down a side track.

Well, I stumbled across some news about Google and the importance of their algoritms and ranking factors to content creators.

Seo is something that a lot of marketers aren't too familiar with. And yet, it is important in getting our content seen by the people who are searching for it, the people who can benefit from it most.

Since it can be a complicated and controversal subject, just to keep it simple let's boil it down to the top 3 ranking factors and what I'll call the basics.

The basics are the things we should already be doing to optimize our content for the search engines and the users.

  • SSL and Site Security
  • Title and Description Tags
  • Mobile Optimized Websites
  • Page Links
  • Anchor Text
  • Avoid Over Optimization/Keyword Stuffing

The Top 3 Ranking Factors

RankBrain - made with machine-learning, as opposed to pre-programmed artificial intelligence, is Google's new algorithm for improving search results and contributing to ranking position. Of the more than 200 ranking factors Google uses, RankBrain, Links and Content are the top 3.

RankBrain measures dwell time and click thru rate and uses that to help determine the quality of your content and where it should be ranked in the search results.

Higher rank leads to greater traffic to your website. For marketers that leads to greater exposure and increased opportunity to make a sale, get a new subscribers, etc.

Then Came The Revelation!

All Hail The Queen!

We've all heard the saying, "Behind Every Great Man Is A Great Woman".

That's when it hit me, there is a similar relationship here. If content is king, the queen - the woman behind the king - must be copywriting! Great copywriting makes great content.

Face it people are only going to stay on your page if they like your content and it satisfies their present need. If they get what they need from your content, they will most likely click on your link or dive deeper into your site.

Well, just knowing that how long a person stays on my web pages is a ranking factor, and that it is directly related to the quality of the content, got me revved up and sent me on a deep dive into learning more about copywriting techniques and strategies.

Covert Copywriting Techniques Unveiled?

The goal of great copywriting is to deliver a clear, concise and compelling message. Headlines, subheadlines, links, labels, images, and even the navigation should all clearly indicate what the message is all about.

Clear and concise? OK..I got that. It was the compelling part that I wanted to become more skilled at. So, I began searching for information on the techniques great copywriters use to keep readers reading .

What I found was enlightening and empowering, and I want to share some highlights from my experience.

A copywriters' black bag holds power words/emotional triggers, bucket brigade phrases, transitional phrases, headline formulas, copywriting content formulas, and probably some things I have yet to become familiar with.

  • Power Words/Emotional Triggers
Any time you want to influence your reader in some way, you want to give them the necessary information, but you also want them to feel so strongly about it that they are compelled to take the desired acton.
  • Bucket Brigades
Bucket Brigades are good for keeping interest alive. Whenever you have a section where someone may get bored and leave, add a Bucket Brigade. These are words and phrases that can help you connect emotionally with the reader and build upon the preceding sentences and lead into the following ideas.
  • Transitional Phrases
Transitional phrases are a way to help your reader connect from one thought to the next.
They are used within a paragraph to connect ideas, as well as to move the reader to the ideas in the next paragraph.Transitions help add flow to your content.
  • Headline Formulas
If a headline doesn’t attract interest, people won’t click. And if people don’t click, no one will read your great article, no one will click the link in your CTA. The headline has to motivate people to look deeper into your content. That's why headline formulas are based on an understanding of human psychology
  • Copywriting Formulas
Master copywriters have used proven formulas for years to write effective copy. Formulas give you a structure to get your creative juices flowing, and help you write faster and better.

And there's more to everything! This just started me on another journey into professional growth. There are many more startegies and techniques that the best copywriters use. Like me, you might find value in learning more about copywriting and the power of words.

A great woman rolling her eye, LOL. I read every word of your article and I must say, very informative. Unless I'm reading a good book, to keep my interest the way you did, says a lot about your content.

As for those five bullet points, I do not use all of them but, I'm going to work on that to help my content be more Queen worthy!

Thanks!

I would suggest to not overlook video. If an embedded video is engaging, they will stay to watch and learn. It takes the viewer a lot less effort to experience a site and appeals to the visual and auditory.

Great post!

MelWaller, my friend, thank you for bringing that to my attention. Everything you said is true. Maybe I'll delve into the benefits of including on page video to increase dwell time and CTR in an upcoming post. BTW Creating videos is high on my list of things to do, so stay tuned, it won't be long...

Thanks!

:-)
