Do You Need to Clean up Old Content?

To keep your website in good shape, you should regularly clean up any old content. You'll soon run into problems if you don't regularly go through old posts. Visitors might see incorrect information or it may harm your rankings if you have too many pages on the same topic.

This can increase the chances of keyword cannibalization which is a tedious process that takes a lot of time to fix. Go through all your posts and decide what you should do.

If you’re using Yoast SEO Premium, you will be able to clean up any abandoned content

Your orphaned content (a list of pages that don’t have any internal links on them)is a great place to begin. This is content that is not linked to other pages on your website. It might surprise you to learn that most people have abandoned content on their websites.

This is a shame because your audience and Google will not be able to find the content. This could mean that you may be missing out on great places in search results, and lots of traffic.

Conclusion

The steps above will allow you to decide if you want to update or remove a page. It also suggests the type of pages and posts that you can link to the updated content if you decide to update it. It will help you fix orphaned content while updating it, then after you have updated your post edit the date to the day you did the update. This way it will be viewed as new content and crawled again.

This is a necessary bit of housekeeping that you should schedule into your week, worth the effort.

Here are a few more tutorials to help you grow:

Put Internal and External links in your quality content and get noticed by Google.

Know the top Google ranking factors and stay in the race.

Find out how many links you should be including in your posts.

Lovely to see you here. I hope this added to your knowledge base and now you feel confident to update those old posts and get them working for you again.

Let me know if you have any questions and please leave a comment and like.

Warm Regards,

Lily

Another brilliant training! I use Yoast all of the time and didn’t know about that particular use. Is there any way to see which of my content is orphaned automatically or do I have to go through all of my posts to figure this out?

Thanks!

Hi Darlene,

Only you can decide which posts are orphans but think about what you are trying to achieve with your website. Which posts speak loudest for your product or service?
