In this video I walk you through activating and making the most of your new SSL certificate on your website. There’s more to it than just flicking a switch.

Update March 21, 2017

The latest version of Chrome requires a different way of accessing the code. Right-click on the page and select "Inspect" from the drop-down list. Click on the "Console" tab and you'll see the mixed content issues.

Go to Site Rubix Site Manager and click on the SitePlus+ button. This turns on the SSL (Secure Socket Layer) but you haven’t finished yet.

It takes a little while to propagate but in a few minutes when you type https://yourwesbite.com you’ll be able to see your site.

If you have links to external websites that are not secure then you may have a “mixed content” issue. Also, your images and other media uploads may not be secure.

When you visit your website you may notice an (i) information symbol instead of the green padlock.

I found a great little plugin to use to fix that “SSL Insecure Content Fixer”. Install the plugin and activate it.

Now go to the plugin’s settings. Start at the top and use trial and error to check which option fixes the mixed content. Use the lowest setting that works for your site and save the changes.

I’ve had to use the setting “Capture” for my website. According to the plugin’s documentation the higher settings have the “most impact on memory usage and biggest potential to break things”. So please be careful.

If you site breaks as a result then please deactivate SSL. Contact Site Support and tell them everything you’ve done Submit a Support Ticket to SiteRubix Hosting Technical Support

When you’ve got your little green padlock working on all pages go to Google Search Console & Bing and verify the HTTPS version for both with and without www.

Hi Marion, I was trying to follow the video above but when I went to my site and clicked on the little i symbol next to the https it wasn't showing what you had - i.e. details - it just had learn more and took me to a google chrome info page. It was different to what you had on this video. I had trouble understanding how to get the little padlock and I can't follow yr video now as I'm not showing the same as you.
My site is an https site - it's my permalinks that are not showing the s - just http
hope you understand the about
thanks

Just follow the steps in the video Ange and you should get the padlock on every post and page.

Hi again, I was trying to follow your video but when you clicked on the little ' i ' in the video, you were able to click on 'details'. When I click on my little ' i ', all it shows is 'learn more' - not 'details' and it just takes me to a google page. So I cannot follow your video any further

great Video! I actually used this a while back and also had to use the capture setting to correct my mixed content.. However what I would like to do now is uninstall it so that I can make room for another plugin without slowing my site down.

Can I disable the plugin and maintain my https status or must it remain on once Its installed?

Good question Robert, try deactivating the plugin and see if the padlock disappears (which it most likely will).

The limit on plugins is so that newbies don't install lots of plugins which can clash with each other and cause technical problems.

If you need to install another plugin then, as long as it is well-coded and doesn't clash, you can do it. I have 20+ plugins that I install on my sites with no ill effect.

Thank you, Marion, that partially worked for me. I still show some images not being secured. I saw a tutorial here at WA a while back on fixing that problem without a plug-in. I'm going to see if I can find it.

I'm using a WordPress theme that I've added a lot of plug-in on to. It's the Sdyney Theme. I'm going to use the one you recommend here in this tutorial, at least til I see if I can fix the problem manually.

Thank you Marion!

I had to add https:// also and found that my SSL was already on. So I followed the rest of the instructions and it went smoothly :)

I only had 2 original pages that didn't have the green padlock but had https:// already.

Then I verified it to Google Search Console and Bing.

It was so simple!

I'm struggling with the fact that even though my site (Wordpress with Divi theme) has a green padlock, when I go to my shop which is an iframe pull through from Amazon, as per the training (thank you!) - I'm getting mixed content messages when I look at the coding in Chrome.
It seems to be blocking the links too. Will this plug in work for that our do we have to wait for Amazon to make their link https//:?
Or am I missing something?
Many thanks!

Hi Debby,

Welcome to Wealthy Affiliate. The plugin doesn't work with the insecure links from Amazon when you've got an Amazon Astore using an iframe. The best workaround I've been able to come up with is outlined in this video I hope this helps. If you have any more questions going forward please don't hesitate to ask.
Reply
Thank you! I wondered if it was okay with Amazon's T&Cs; to take people directly to the store?
I also notice that it should be fixed by the end of March too, which is a great relief! I can't believe that Amazon didn't see this coming.... or chose to ignore it.
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
My sentiments exactly. You would have thought they'd have acted a lot sooner. I'll be changing my aStore back to the iframe version as soon as they get their act together.

It must be OK to take people directly to the store because that's one of the options they give you when you're setting it up.
Reply
Hi Marion - have you heard anything about Amazon having provided a fix for this please. I still can't get the store to work. Perhaps delete the whole thing and start gain?

Hi Marion,
I am stuck. Done everything so far and no results my one site bestinternetwork.com just won't clear.

do you think it could be the theme itself? I had trouble with this same theme on a different site. It was not related to this problem though lol

never a dull moment

Part of the problem is with the images you got from Aweber. Try to find substitutes that are being served securely or download the images from the source and upload them to your website.

Sorry, I have no idea what the item in red is. Try a different theme and see if it goes away.

Please read the update I've added to the text above.

Hi Marion .. sorry to trouble you .. I am having a problem with the SSL on a new site. It uses Sydney Theme. The site is just draft. After I switched on the SSL I got the little i symbol .. I downloaded SSL Insecure Content Fixer as you said and Capture (not Capture all) got my green padlock on. However I have lost the images from the front page slider and the header images on the About Page .. is that what you mean by the site "Breaks"? So if it is then I go to site support? And if it is not then what do I do?

Again, sorry to trouble you, I hope you can assist with some advice.

Cheers, William.

Hi William, can you turn off the SSL and see if the images come back? Are the images in your media library or is there another way that you've put the images in? Maybe you could delete the images from the media library and upload them again when you've got the SSL activated.

I'm running out of ideas here...
Reply
WilliamBH Premium
Yes if I turn off SSL the images come back. The pics are in the media library. Ok I will do what you said. I might even make a test site using the standard theme pics not my pics and see if that is ok with SSL. That is a task for tomorrow.

At this stage the SSL is non critical and the site and the Facebook page come up as 1 and 2 in Google for the brand name. The site is only for reference purposes at this point as our traffic comes all from Facebook.

I will let you know how I go after I play around tomorrow.

Thank you for your help.

Cheers, William.

Hi Marion .. I said I would get back to you. I did not get to review this until day, spent 4 hours on it .. did the trial site etc. Final outcome is the Theme running on the trial site has no problem while the same Theme on the fitness site (even with almost no content) has an issue. I have got it to the point when it is all secure (green padlock) and the sliders are working. Had to use the Capture on the SSL Insecure Content Fixer.

Any way all working, no idea what the underlying issue is as I have almost eliminated everything!

Thanks for your input.

Cheers, William.

Hi Marion,
So strange, I could have sworn I posted something here yesterday but it disappeared!

I'm a wee bit worried about using the plug in because I'm afraid I will break my site, so I was going to go about downloading the banner/ads and then connecting them to my links...

But how do I go about downloading them? On Commission Junction I do not see an option for this... would you suggest maybe just screen-shoting the image, or is there another way?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
Each advertiser has their own way of providing links, perhaps you could find out more at cj.com
Reply
TravelCarrot Premium
Will do. However, I was thinking that I could do a quick "print-screen", edit it (in Paint), save, and then I should be good to go.. would that be breaking any rules?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
That's most likely what I would do but I haven't read the terms and conditions of every program on cj.

Marion, Found your video and it is very helpful. One thing, when you open the (i) for the content details on the URL you click on Details. I don't get Details to show up. I get Learn More and it takes me to a window with settings on my Chrome browser. What do you have set to get Details on your URL?

One thing about the internet that doesn't change is the fact that it's constantly changing and evolving. It looks like Chrome has updated the browser (yet again) and the "Details" has been replaced by the "Learn More" page.

Dear MarionBlack,

Thank you so much for this Tutorial, it has really helped me a ton. :) I chose the 2nd Option and it worked. However, since I believe I have a very Updated Version of WordPress, I saw that when I went into the Plugin Settings for SSL Insecure Content Fixer that my last option read as Capture All. You did yours on Capture, so does this mean for every new website I want the Green Padlock to be there, it can fall into those 5 categories: Simple, Content, Widgets, Capture, and Capture All?

Thanking you,

~Angel

So far the Capture setting is working on all my sites and I haven't had to use Capture All. Try to use the lowest setting that works.

Thank you! I couldn't find which content makes my website insecure. You encouraged me to use "Capture" in "ssl icf" plugin :) so, I enjoy the green padlock! I think it is very, very important because my website is the shop. But I don't know what made my web insecure. Do you know how to check it, I mean - the details?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
It's usually images and other media that cause the problem. To ascertain exactly what is insecure you'd have to turn off the SSL and investigate every single page on your website individually.
Reply
bolec Premium
That's why I love solutions like "ssl icf" plugin. Investigate every single page? Should I let my curiosity takes an ages from my life time ? :))) thx!

Okay, I deactivated the plugin and it went back to no green padlock so I will not do that. I also wanted to know I do not have an F5 button so what do I press to see what is actually causing it? I know I am annoying, sorry, but all this stuff get's confusing. So, thank you so much, Marion, for all your help and patience :)

Hi Marion, thanks for the training. I have the green padlock on my site now. How do I verify the https version on Google Search Console? I'm using Yoast. Do I follow the training on this link?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
All you have to do is go to Search Console and Add Website using the httpS version and click on Verify. Do the same with httpS://WWW. Google gets the information that you've already input (using Yoast) when you verified the first time. You're just adding the httpS versions.
Reply
VonnieOh Premium
Strange. I was able to verify for the non www version but not the www version. Are there any consequences if I'm able to verify just one and not the other?

Do the without www version and www version share the same meta tag? What do I have to do to verify the www version?
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
It's all the same meta tag. Perhaps you made a small error in typing. Just enter:
https://yourdomain.com and
https://www.yourdomain.com (whatever your domain name actually is)
Reply
VonnieOh Premium
I used this: https://www.souperdiaries.com/. I don't see anything wrong with it? But it says "Verification failed for https://www.souperdiaries.com/ using the HTML file method (3 minutes ago). Your verification file was not found."
Reply
MarionBlack Premium
It's automatically redirecting to the non-www version so I would just skip verifying the www version as long as the non-www version is verified.

After the website is verified, does the sitemap have to be re-submitted or no need?

Hi Marion, just an update.

I did manage to "fix" all my 4 websites with the plugin you suggested.
However, I had quite a run with two websites going down right to the "capture" setting.
The culprits btw were my own images of me.

Questions:
Can I reuse my images once again after now everything is alright and I also have submitted all my websites in Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Console?
And, should I go back to those 2 websites, I mentioned, to the "Simple" setting once again or just leave it altogether?

I also discovered that in Analytics one of my websites has been gone altogether and I had to re-submit it again. Is this "normal" can this happen and why will it happen in the first place?

I know, lol lots of questions but right now I am so happy that I can see the green padlock on all my websites. :

Thanks again for the help, so appreciated. :)

Hi Marion,

Great and easy to understand tutorial and video. I have updated all my website the long way round, going through my text in WP editor that was showing http not https.
ONE question I have updated to Google Console and Bing but I believe Kyle mentioned, here at WA we hosting we don't use www. for our websites.
Am I correct in saying this Marion ??

Thank you,

John

Even if we don't use the WWW version other people do. So we have to cater for them too.

By the way is your computer OK still?

Hello Marion,

All is absolutely fine now, thank you. I have got Macafee checking my computer every few weeks, they go through everything and clean it up if necessary.
They have also installed protection, where it shows green ticks for safe websites, if I click on a website or page Macafee gives me a large warning page with a red cross.

Thanks a lot for this training, Marion!

I have two websites with two green padlocks, now! :))

I had to remove one banner in the sidebar of one website, otherwise even Capture-setting was not enough to make the site secure!

I have both sites with Content-setting now and they are green!

Thanks, Gerlinde

thanks Marion for the great training. For me, the padlock is present on all pages/posts. Meaning that I don't need to use the plugin you describe.
Also I have added a new property in the google search console with the https and I fetch mew posts only there. The ancient property with http I won't use anymore. Is that OK?
