Disadvantages of Using Your Personal Name as Your Brand Name

  • Your domain name may not pass the Domain Phone test. If your domain name is mentioned over the phone, the person at the end of the line should be able to spell it without much difficulty. If he does, then it has passed the domain name test
  • Also, if, in the future, you decide to sell off the website, it is usually more difficult to sell websites that have personal domain names. It is much easier to sell a website whose domain name reflects just what the business is all about.

There is much to gain if you use your personal name as a domain name. However, you may like to consider the instance that in the near or distant future, after building your website, you may wish to sell it off to new owners.

Getting buyers may prove a bit difficult because of the domain name. Aside from that, if a website carries your name as the domain name, it may be difficult for people to easily figure out what your business is all about.

If you already have a domain name that happens to be your personal name, this tutorial is not meant to discourage you from using it. In fact, you stand to gain a lot if you have long-term plans for it.

You should plan on how best to use it; for instance, developing your own brand and reaching out to your customers through it. You should use your brand to develop a very strong presence in your niche.

It is also possible for you to change your brand name at any time you wish but you should be able to justify your reason for changing it.

Conclusion

Using your personal name for your domain is a matter of personal opinion and choice. If your goal is to grow your website and develop your brand through your website, then it will be a good idea to use your personal name as your domain name.

If, on the other hand, you have plans to build a business and put it up for sale later, then you should apply creativity and give it an attractive name that will showcase what the business is all about and help you grow your business making it worth selling. There are many advantages you get with having a domain name the same as your personal name.

Lately I have in mind to put for my wife her first and last name in the domain of her site. Thank you Israel for clarifying the pros and cons.

I have a domain with my name but am not using it at the moment, maybe later. Food for thought.

Of course, you should keep that personalized domain name and start using it some other time. Thanks for your lovely comment, Lily!

Great post Israel. For me using my name as a brand has enabled me to get far more exposure, as near enough everything I do online, (emails, posts, comments and sites) will have my name in some form or another. It's also free publicity.
