INTRODUCTION...

This is an important subject and skill you as an entrepreneur need to learn about and implement in your online marketing business. If you do not, the repercussions can run from achieving less than what is possible all the way to abject failure...

This tutorial will walk you through what holds people back and what steps can be taken to make sure that you are getting every bit of production out of your time. I have broken the training into 7 modules for ease of digestion hehe...

Here is what we will cover in this time management tutorial:

(1) Why Time Management Is Important.

(2) 5 Tactics For Getting As Much Done In Your Online Business.

(3) Top 7 Time Management and Productivity Apps For Your Smartphone.

(4) How To Create A Schedule When Working From Home On Your Online Business.

(5) How to Stay Accountable While Working From Home.

(6) How To Use The 80/20 Principle In Your Online Business.

(7) When Are You Most Productive? Finding The Best Time For You To Work.

How Best to Use This Tutorial?

My recommendation is that you go through section by section and take the time to evaluate how it pertains to your particular situation and then implement the actionable pieces of advice.

This does not have to be done in a day, a week, or even longer. It can be done as it fits your time, your needs, and what you think will help you. But I do urge you to take action asap...

This is such an important factor in your success here at Wealthy Affiliate and also for your business effort...

Review what you are doing, how you are doing it, and even if you think right now that you have your stuff together, use the information herein to see if there are any areas of time management that you can improve on...

Remember that your time is money...You have to be willing to trade your time for making money until you automate the tasks to the point where someone else is working to get them done, because you are making enough money to make it so...

So do not waste your time or it will take longer to get to that point!

So having laid all this out, let's get started!

First, A Useful Infographic...

Just in case you do NOT have time to go through this rather lengthy tutorial, I have added in this infographic to give you a 'down and dirty: on time management.

Why Time Management Is Important.

Most people imagine that working from home is a casual affair can be done on an ‘ad hoc’ basis, as you make time for it and as you have desire…

Nothing could be further from the truth. Online marketing requires as much seriousness in your attitude and behavior, as with any other offline bricks and mortar business.

It is true that operating a home business allows you the flexibility to choose the time to work…

But managing your time well will allow you to get good results...

Some of the reasons why time management is important when working from home include:

1. It plays a big role in the success of your home business.

Time is a resource and you can use it wisely or waste it and not be as effective nor get the results you are looking for…

My feeling is that no matter how much capital you invest, if you have not internalized the essentials of time management, you will flop.

You realize that there are a lot of distractions for people who run home businesses. Phone calls from friends, relatives who want to catch up, or children who reach for your attention simply because they see you around.

These and many other distractions are all around you – but you must plan and make sure they do not interfere with your business.

I would start by creating a work schedule and sticking to it...

If your phone rings, you can either ignore it if it is not an emergency, or politely inform the callers that you are working.

You should also let you friends and family know that specific hours of your day are reserved for working.

Remember, nobody will take your business seriously if you do not show them that they need to.

2. It reduces stress.

The temptation to indulge in the many distractions at home can be overwhelming…

I think all of us have good intentions, and you promise yourself that all you will do is to respond to a few Facebook messages or check out what is going on in the world of Twitter.

Then before you know it, you have spent a lot of your valuable time reading random things on the internet. Or maybe you decided to catch up with your friends, and hours later, it hits you that a lot of work concerning your business is undone.

The result is instant stress!

You find yourself trying to make up for lost time…

There are a lot of people who have not grasped the importance of time management and they always end up straining themselves continuously in an attempt to meet deadlines and fulfill their own or maybe their client’s needs.

Think about how easier it would be if you managed your time well. You will get everything done on time, and get time to relax after everything is done.

It just makes life a lot easier on so many levels…

3. Proper time management increases profits.

Another reason why time management is important when working from home is the fact that it increases productivity.

Once you dedicate specific time to developing and working on your business, you will reap the benefits.

You will get more work done, and this is likely to translate to better profits compared to when you do not spend your time well.

Seems so simple, but it is true...

4. Create a good relationship with your customers.

When you manage your time well, you are able to meet the demands of your customers.

This is because proper time management allows you to allocate the appropriate time to go through your customer’s needs and deliver what they ask for.

On the other hand, if you waste your time on other things that are not work related, you will find yourself working under pressure.

This can result into a chain of disappointed customers, frustration for you, and this will definitely affect your business negatively.

5. It allows you to learn more concerning your business.

Always bear in mind that you will only expand your business if you invest your time in it.

There are so many things you can learn about your home business when you spend time studying business trends, and implementing changes to improve it.

If you do not manage your time well, you will always be in a race against time, trying to meet deadlines.

This can be very exhausting, leaving you with no time to learn about expanding your business.

6. It reduces your work load.

You will not believe how much your work load will be reduced when you know how to manage you time well.

First, you reduce the likelihood of having a have a pile up of work to attend to because you spent most of the day doing other things.

Managing your time well also means that you will not have to deal with inconveniences such as making up lapses to your customers by giving them extras to cover for their unmet needs or hiring an extra hand to help you manage your work load.

7. It prevents you from getting entangled in legal battles.

If you do not manage your time well, you may end up getting involved in legal cases with customers/clients who suffer the consequences of your poor work.

You can get sued for not delivering what you had promised. Do not think that since you run a home business, you are not obligated to offer good services.

You have to know how to work with the time you have so that you deliver what you promise.

8. You create time for other personal needs.

Having a home business does not mean that you have to ignore your personal needs and those of your family.

All you need to do is to create a timetable that allows you to engage in your business, and gives you sufficient time to spend time doing your personal things.

Otherwise, you will keep trying to balance them, and at some point, you may feel like a failure.

Basically, there are many reasons why time management is important when working from home.

Always try to make the most out of your time so that both you and your customers can be happy.

The key is making your home business a priority and giving it the time and attention it deserves. If you compromise on your time management skills, then you can be sure of failure and disappointment.

OK, now I hope you understand how important time management is...Now let's move to the next angle I want to cover onthe subject...It too is important...

Great...Time management is an issue I think for us all...It was actually a chunk of my precious time to put this together, but knowing that others are like us, I added in the infographic so people could take something away from the effort and hopefully apply it to their own scheduling of time...Mission accomplished hehe! Thanks Dave. I just read the infographic because I think I'm pretty good with time management already.

I use a program called EfficientPIM. I group tasks according to High, Medium and Low priority. Then every Friday afternoon I plan out the next week, blocking out work time in 1 hour chunks with breaks in between.

That sounds like a very useful program! I am 'old school' I guess...I use a notebook (I am now on 18 since starting) and daily write stuff down...Massive amounts hehe! Thanks for sharing, I hope some can use it!!! Cheers! Dave : )

Thank you for all of the great information you included. I am having such a difficult time keeping my priorities straight. Working from home sounds easy, but there is always so much to do and pressure to get more done at home since I do not have a "real job." In the mean time, I am not getting work done on my website, etc. ~Gina

From my specifically allocated 'working desk" I thank you for these brilliant time management strategies!

It really does make the difference. For me I think about the cost of not getting the tasks done for that day... how much money would I lose over the course of the year if I don't get into the habit of doing this?

Absolutely life-changing if you can get into the habit!

A couple of simple things that really help me are:

1) A website called "tomato timer" (just search on google) it counts down in 25 min period... it means i cant make a cup of tea or do anythign esle but get this post finished before the timer is up!

2) Another thing is the 'anti-to do list"... instead of writing the tasks down i need to accomplish, i start the day with a blank page and write the tasks ive done as i complete them... at the end of the day i look and say to myself "wow look at all ive done today!" A great motivator : )

Awesome training Dave, being in business brings it complexities, creating online brings a different set of complexities managing time is one of the ones that should be centre stage, thank you .

Thanks a lot for stopping by Alexander...I appreciate the compliment on the training I added....The reason I did this is because it seems to be a common thread that runs through many comments from members here...

There are a lot that could use some guidance on setting up their schedule and figuring out how to use their time wisely when they are working on their online business...

Even a guy like me needs to read stuff like what I posted on time management...I think it is a constant battle and we have to be aware of the many things that will suck our time away...

You are right that this is what we used to call the long pole in the tent...Without this and a few other main mantras of running a business, we are likely to fail...

So I do hope that the training will resonate with folks here and there are many that likely do not need such training, they already are doing the things that need to be done, when they need to be done...

That set of people that may be new to the working at home world or those that may just need a gentle reminder is who this training will help I hope...

Cheers!

Dave,
Thanks for the information. Time management one of the hardest things to sort when working from home. I write notes before bed each night and track each item on it. Taking a time management course in the 90's has helped me a lot. Prioritizing each task helps also.

Hi, John...

Yes, it was the early 80s when I got into the time management courses, and I put what I learned to use right away. It all made sense and also made things easier...

At the time, I was a college student, fairly new being married (a couple of years), had 2 babies in diapers, and was in a leadership position in the military (running a couple of dining facilities in Bavaria)...

I also was enrolled in military correspondence courses, was running classes for me men, and had all the other military stuff going on...

Those were the days of endless energy and a drive to succeed that would not quit. In hindsight, I am not sure how I got through it all, but I had a lot of help from my wife, who supported me the whole way...

I continued at that pace for many years, taking in more responsibility in the military and continuing to push for the education side of things...It all ended quite well, I lived to retire at the ripe old age of 42 hehe...

But I did not stop there, I went to work a week after retirement for Halliburton in Bosnia-Herzegovina at quadruple my last salary from the military...

Later I started as an independent consultant and eventually established my own business working from 4 continents...Based in Germany, I was loving life

What kept me on target throughout those years and after was the time management aspect of how I ran my life. By staying on top of things, I was able to complete what I did while still having time for the family with the exception of times I was deployed...

Time management is something I know quite well, and something I have lived...Over the long term, it will make a huge difference in your success or lack thereof...

Thanks for your input - it is valued!

Cheers!

Not a problem at all...I first started getting interested so many years ago in time management - I think it was in 1981 or so hehe...That was when I was a young lad trying to work my way up the Corporate ladder so to speak! I have used some of the principles since that time and still do today...I can see when I am starting to slack off, and then take corrective actions (or not hehe)...Cheers! Dave : )

if I see I waste time I time myself every 30 minutes the first 3 days to see where is my distraction. Later than I have installed a software what make screenshots on my computer to show me where I do stroll around. Good way to improve your time management.

That is a good tool I have not heard of. Especially since we spend do much time on the computer it likely can point out some real lapses in our time management effort!

Thanks for adding this tip, is the software you are using free (I like free hehe)? If so perhaps you could share it here with us?
