So for the purpose of this training I have used four broad categories of comment, to describe the more difficult and awkward comments that you may have to work with (you may add more).

  1. The Jellybaby- Answers that are short and sweet
  2. The Teacher - Likes to lecture at you or other readers rather than engage with you
  3. The Conversationalist - Loves to talk (about anything) covers several different topics or asks several questions at once
  4. The Robot - spams the site with links and selling products

The last comment group the Robot will always be a delete button, because they are not adding anything to your site and secondly they are also providing links that may end up getting you penalised by Google.

This also applies to legitimate comments that may add a website link, you need to verify it first and decide whether this is useful for you. You don't necessarily have to delete the link many bloggers use comments as a way of promoting their own work or highlighting other related material, but you have to decide on the merit and relevance of the link.

However for the rest of the training I want to offer examples of how the other three groups of comment can be used to suit your needs rather than being dismissed outright.

Hello Marie, this is some great training! You opened my eyes to the use of the comments to my benefit. That is something I haven't thought about in that way. Thanks so much!

Thank you for this, Marie. I plan to entertain (ask for) reply commenting in my main blog when I launch it. Although I have wondered how controlling it will work.....and how much time I am going to have to devote to the sorting and answering. Your tutorial helps me think it through.

No problem Wayne thanks for the comment, on most sites you do at least get the chance to plan your response before the comment is actually published, which does take the pressure off slightly.
