When you tweet with an image 2 positive things will happen. 1) Your tweet will grab more attention on the Twitter home feed because it will stand out and will get more engagement on average than tweets without images. 2) Your tweet will continue to grab attention many days later as people visit your profile.
AN IMAGE GIVES LASTING APPEAL
In the image below of the Tweet Activity Card, this tweet is more than a week old, 9 days to be exact. It has a total of 1,841 impressions and after 2 days old it only had about 530. So it gained the bulk of impressions from NOT being on the Twitter home feed but rather from people coming to my Twitter profile and being intrigued by the image I used to stop and look at it.
Another nice thing about this tweet, I had 2 Link Clicks within those first 2 days but I gained another one while it was sitting on my profile. You may not think 3 Link Clicks is a lot but 3 is better than 0 which is what many tend to get. How many do you get on average?
