Numbers are Crucial

BuzzFeed's clever approach helped them achieve great click-through rates and become a leader within their field.

Copy this trick to improve the quality of your writing. Here's how numbers can help improve your conversion rates.

They are easy to scan, primarily if written in Arabic numerals (2, 4, or 15) rather than words (two, four, or fifteen). They stand out and attract the attention of users.

Numbers make statements more accurate and more reliable.

Be Prepared to Create an A/B Test

A/B testing, like conversion rate optimization, is one of the most powerful ways to improve your writing. I recommend you test different copywriting strategies for your website to find what works best. All you are doing is altering one or two aspects at a time and seeing if you get better results.

These ideas will give you inspiration if you are unsure what kind of copy should be tested:

  • Change using My to Your or vice versa
  • Button CTAs (e.g., Sign up vs. Start now)
  • Headers and Sub-headers
  • Add adjectives (describing words, e.g. big, red, silly, fun …) and phrases to your copy
  • Microcopy (e.g., Add No credit card necessary below the registration form)

Sometimes a version that doesn't look better at first can be converted to a higher conversion rate. This is an example from Google.

Hi Lily,
There are basics and just good tips I have overlooked in the past.

My one thought is Google wants at least 1,000 words to rank at all. I have always thought that was excessive, but I am not Google.

I suppose it depends on what you are writing about. A thesis on "Babe Ruth" would require much more than 1k words while selling a clothing affiliate wouldn't

I will have to apply this to my own business.

Thanks for your wonderful teaching.

Hi Bill, great to see you here. I tend to agree with you about the word length but a recent study showed that Google is happiest with around 1300 words and that's what I aim for generally and it is paying off.

Stay well.

Hi Lily,
Thanks for the tip. It is sometimes hard to keep up with Goggle as they change their outlook and requirements.

Have a great week.
