One thing I see a lot of members asking is, can I change the keyword in my page or post title? Now most times they are asking this hours or even days after they have already clicked on “Publish” and their post is live. If this happens to you and your keyword is part of your permalink, DO NOT change or delete your title, just leave it be.

Changing the permalink title after it has already been indexed by Google is not a smart thing to do and you will create a 404 crawl error. As soon as you click on Publish the title of that page or post needs to stay as is because it is part of the permalink. If you happen to find a better keyword after publishing, use it in a new post or page.

However if you used my example of adding your keyword to the Title Meta Tag after you clicked Save Draft to set your permalink, that keyword is not part of your actual title within the permalink and can be changed. As long as you do not change the permalink, you can change everything else.

ARE YOU USING SAVE DRAFT?

How do you create your content? Do you sit in front of WordPress and type it all out and then click Publish? If you do you may want to change that approach because you are setting yourself up for problems like I described above. You should never click Publish until you are absolutely sure that what you have is what you want to publish. If you need more time to search for a better keyword then click on “Save Draft” instead of Publish.

Another thing you never want to do is delete a page or post that has been already published. Again, never click Publish until you are absolutely sure. If you are not sure then click Save Draft that is what it is for, to save your work in progress. There is no reason you need to rush your content.

Thanks people. I hope the training gave you a better understanding of how to get a long keyword to appear in the title when the original title is a different word. If you liked this training or have any questions on what I just covered here, please leave a comment below and I will reply.

Great tutorial Robert and it answers so many questions. Can a title be changed after publishing if the key words are still in the title and the permalink has not changed

Using my "Getting Started" example, I can change the keyword portion of the title as many times as I like because it is NOT part of the permalink.

Only Getting Started is in the permalink and what is in the permalink after it is published should never be changed. If the permalink is changed in any way it will cause a 404 crawl error when Google goes to crawl your content.
