What can you do to get any keyword, especially a long tail keyword to fit into the page title when the title is already another word? I use the Save Draft and Title Meta Tag way. Though you could create a custom menu, this way is quicker and easier, I think.

On my website I have a page called Getting Started, see above image, but I wanted to use a low hanging fruit keyword to get great rankings. So what I did was create the page as Getting Started and then I clicked on Save Draft. This will set the permalink URL as my website name and then the extension of Getting Started. But I still want the keyword to appear in search results.

USING THE TITLE META TAG

After saving my page title in Draft I would then go down to the Title Meta tag just under the snippet which appears under the WordPress editor window, see above image, and retype my page title Getting Started. I then type a dash (-) and then my keyword How to Stay Clear of Online Scams, and then I click on Save Draft again. This keyword is NOT part of the permalink and doesn't really get added to your actual title. It is added for search engine purposes only.

NOTE: As is seen above the character count says 87. This is a deceptive number because it is including the character count of my website name which is not part of my title, look at the snippet. The maximum character count is 60. My page title + keyword = 51. The additional 36 is that of my website name.

STEPS I TOOK

4 SIMPLE STEPS

  • Name your page title
  • Click Save Draft to set your title permalink
  • Go down to Title Meta Tag and re-type your title, add a dash – and then your keyword
  • Click Save Draft to set keyword in your search engine title and you are done. Now continue to create your content.

So now when someone searched for that keyword in Google they will see, Getting Started - How to Stay Clear of Online Scams, see above image. Adding your keyword in this way is quick, easy and does not require the added steps to create a custom menu. Adding the keyword in this way will not screw up your permalink either.

Great tutorial Robert and it answers so many questions. Can a title be changed after publishing if the key words are still in the title and the permalink has not changed

Using my "Getting Started" example, I can change the keyword portion of the title as many times as I like because it is NOT part of the permalink.

Only Getting Started is in the permalink and what is in the permalink after it is published should never be changed. If the permalink is changed in any way it will cause a 404 crawl error when Google goes to crawl your content.
