Optimizing your homepage for search engines may work for some people, but it should not be your only goal. We will be exploring the main purpose of a homepage, and giving tips for optimizing it to make it even more awesome.
While you might be able to rank your homepage for every key phrase, it is not the best strategy. These pages perform better than targeted landing pages. A good homepage can help build and strengthen your brand.
What's your website all about?
I want you to first look at what your website stands for. Although it may seem obvious, you should display your mission and uniqueness on your homepage.
Keyword Strategy
Many people are trying to optimize their homepages for a specific keyword. Some of these people are local businesses and believe that the homepage should be at the top of their SEO strategy.
I recommend that you focus your website on more keywords than one and create a strategy that includes a variety of keywords. But note that multiple keywords won't make a complete keyword strategy.
Are you just listing products and services on your homepage, or does your website actually have a welcoming message for visitors? One of the worst things website owners can do is to write "welcome" on their website.
Your homepage is meant to tell your visitors what they can find on the site. What is your primary product or service? What information can they find on your products page, and your company's website? What is your main benefit (USP, Unique Selling Point) to the visitor? How can you stand out from the crowd?
