So you have forwarded something without realising it was a hoax. Or you see someone else forwarding something that you know is a hoax. You wonder what to do now and if you should correct your mistake in case you made one.

Most people who forward a hoax don't actually ever correct their mistake. Here are some reasons why:

  1. Shame - people are simply too ashamed and think if they do nothing the thing will blow over sooner and people will forget that you made a mistake.
  2. Better safe than sorry - But it COULD have been true, right?
  3. Not sure what to do - Some are not sure how to correct their mistake.
  4. Funny - Yes, unfortunately some people will think it's funny they are causing others to panic

Why Is It Important Not to Forward A Hoax

So you might actually genuinely wonder why is it such a big deal. Why does it matter so much? Well, please go to the second page to find out why people actually create hoaxes and read it again. Here is why you should never forward a hoax. You are actually part of:

  1. Spreading panic! People do unwise things when they panic.
  2. Hurt people in case of a warning of person.
  3. Hurt businesses in case of a unfair competition or dirty sales tactics.
  4. Clocking up the media and slowing down system.
  5. Desensitising people for real online dangers.

Why Is is Important To Correct Your Mistake

So you know now what your unwilling actions have caused and you should realise why it's important to actually correct your mistake, instead of sitting there and wanting it all go away.
