Step 9: Adding Your First Video

Well, for YouTube channel owners, the sweetest thing is how to add a video. Click the arrow in the upper right corner and select a video from your personal computer.

Uploading of the selected video will begin. While this process is ongoing, you can choose a name, make a description and set tags.

If you want to make it a bit cooler, just head straight to the Advanced Settings section. Here you can allow or close comments (by default they are open), allow or block access to the statistics of video views (by default open), select a category for the video, set age limits and more.

Now hit the Publish button.

After a while, when several videos are published, the channel will begin to gain popularity, new subscribers will come, some of the videos will start to “generate massive views”, and others will not, there will be a need to study the channel’s statistics.

To go to the channel statistics section, on the channel’s main page, hit the corresponding button at the top.

YouTube Channel Statistics

In the channel statistics you can view:

  • Statistics for a certain period (day, week, month, year or randomly);
  • Total viewing time;
  • Average viewing time;
  • Number of views;
  • Comments, likes and dislikes;
  • Regions in which you most often watched videos
  • From which sites playback was launched (from YouTube or other sites)
  • Demographic data of the audience (gender, age, etc)

Having studied in detail the statistics for your entire channel, it is possible to identify videos of what format the audience is interested in, what mistakes are made when creating videos, and for which audience it is necessary to create content.

Wow, you made it so simple and easy to start a YouTube channel. I can't wait to start my own.
Questions:
1) Do I need a paid software for editing purpose or can I use the free once?
2) What is normally the length for the video?

thank you so much for the informative training. All the best to your future endeavors.

I’ve not yet recorded for YouTube but I have made videos for my own training courses on Udemy and I’ve tried different free editing softwares. They are often watermarked or freemium so you end up needing to upgrade to do everything you want to. I bought software in the end which is brilliant: easy to use, intuitive and edits multiple tracks of video and audio. You’ll waste time and effort and get frustrated going along the free route, my advice is to set your budget and buy something that will give you full functionality and a support team backing you if you get stuck.

Thank you Kate for your answer. If I may ask for your personal preference software or favorite, which one would it be?

I use Screenflow - its free to trial then you pay about $130 for it. I like it as its so easy to use but will produce a good finished item. I've also invested in a decent microphone, but I have found the video on my iPhone has been good enough although I may invest in a camera in the future.

1) I am personally using a couple of paid software for my youtube channel ( Adobe Premiere Pro, VideoScibe) but I am using it simply because the channel is generating money. Before that, I haven't invested any money in Softwares apart from a Canon t3i camera and a $15 microphone.

Before your channel starts generating some $ I highly don't recommend investing a lot of money in Softwares because, at the end of the day, the quality of your videos matters the most. I mean the message you're delivering to your audience is the one you should give more attention which is free but time-consuming.

On my channel, ''Armstrong Wil'' I share some of the free tools I use!

2)If you're planning to make money through Youtube Partner Program in the future, I highly recommend 10min or more per video. Because for videos with less than 10 min, you will have one ad in the beginning and one at the and. For 10min or more videos, you will have the option to place many ad backs within the video. Which means longer videos make more money than the short ones.

Hi Israel, thank you for this training. I am wanting to get started with YouTube very soon, so I needed this. For recording all I have is my iPhone, what editing software would I need? I really know nothing about it, and can I edit for free or do I need to pay? (Total newbie here).
Thank you.
