Facebook was initially designed to function like an interactive online yearbook. You start by creating a free personal profile that includes a photo and some biographical information. Next, you can search for people you know and send them friend requests. Once accepted, your friends can see your profile and updates and you can see theirs.
These status updates make up a running stream of content. When you view your home page on Facebook, you will see a news feed of the status updates from those you are connected to. In addition to brief text-based message, users can share photos, videos and links. It’s a bit like being a voyeur into the lives of those you’re connected to. You also have the opportunity to comment back on a friend’s post and begin to engage in online conversation.
