What are we going to be learning?
In my previous English usage training module, Me? Bother with correct English?, I discussed the topics of credibility and clarity and their relationship to the use of correct English, grammar, punctuation and spelling in our websites.
As we discovered, it is important to create credibility with our visitors and customers because we are now the 'experts' in our chosen field or niche. And to do that, we need to be writing with a reasonable level of English competence. Our visitors need to be able to understand what we are trying to say - or sell - as the case may be...that's clarity.
English is an idiotic language...
...an eclectic mishmash of Celtic, Saxon, Norman, French, German, Latin, Greek, Arabic - you name it - we've borrowed words from every language 'family' on earth. It's grammar rules are a nightmare to master and it's spelling rules basically don't exist. So don't despair if you find English tough. Even English-experts don't agree on some very basic points!
In this module, I am moving away from 'rules'
and I hope it will help you to understand a few techniques that govern our use of the language that are not exactly grammar, spelling or punctuation. We need to learn how to use words to create a compelling reason for our customers and visitors to keep returning to our websites. Correct English usage is only one of them because sometimes we need to break the rules! Like starting a sentence with a conjunction for emphasis:-)
First off, we will look at courtesy and why that is important to your customers.
If you'd like to reacquaint yourself with the first module, then check it out here. Otherwise, let's move on!
Excellent tutorial! Your conversational style creates a very friendly atmosphere for learning a difficult subject. I think you will reach those who desperately need this training in order to produce coherent content for their websites.
Cheers to you from the other Ellie!
