Please be sure to do this, as it will make a complete copy of the parent theme.

16. Click Create New Child Theme

The next step is we must check our work to verify our Child Theme was created to satisfaction. Then once satisfied, we will Activate and Publish our Child Theme.

Great training Kaju, have bookmarked it for later! Just one question - if I create a child theme for an established site, will the parent theme automatically become inactive once the child theme is published or do I have to deactivate it manually?
Reply
jetrbby80316 Premium
Hey Sammy, great question!
Once the child theme is published, the parent theme will automatically become inactive; the child theme replaces it.

However, you can re-activate the Parent theme anytime in your Themes page. But why would you want to?

The Child theme has your back!

Brilliant, thanks Kaju!

That Means, I have to work for new posts/blogs on Child Theme only and let the Main Theme be INACTIVE forever, am I Correct?
Reply
jetrbby80316 Premium
Or inactive as long as you want it to, Gaurav. You can re-activate the main theme anytime, but that only will put your site back in harm's way.

I am very surprised at that Loes. xxx

Yes Loes, you won't need this. This was requested from some of the newbies, and initially inspired by a PM conversation I had with a well-known member here who wasn't familiar with child themes.

Hope you can apply this better now Gaurav, Read my answer to Mary's question in detail and that should clear much up.

The BEST thing you can do is just create a child theme, then study it with the reading material. Things will make sense.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance, my friend.

Great training, thank you Kaju! I've set up my child theme and it all worked perfectly. So just to clarify, when I want to make any changes or add content, I do that in my parent theme. Will those changes copy over to my child theme when I activate my child theme? Is the child theme meant as a carbon copy to replace the parent theme if the parent theme gets damaged or loses info?
Reply
jetrbby80316 Premium
Wonderful Kim, glad this was helpful!

No. When I want to make any changes or add content, for now and in the future all changes will be made to the Child Theme.

The child theme is meant as a carbon copy to replace the parent theme if the parent theme gets damaged or loses info, so when Wordpress updates (as oftem happens) or you ever updated the Parent, only the Parent Theme is in harms way of losing information. i.e. graphics, text, etc.. NOT the Child Theme.

Hence, that is how having a Child Theme now is protecting you.

Couldn't you spell your name or something this morning that you had to type it all those times for your test site OR do you start your first test site with just Kaju.siterubix.com and then for each test site you just add another Kaju on to the name lol. Not sure I would like to see it if you had 7 or 8 test sites lol. xxxx
Reply
jetrbby80316 Premium
Never thought of that, if I had 8 test sites that would be 24 Kaju's!
Reply
Chezbrown Premium
imagine typing that websites name lol. You would be punch drunk trying to make sure you had enough Kaju's lol. xxxx

Na can't do it with clown juice as you would start omitting letters and then it wouldn't make any sense at all then would it lol. xxx
