Okay, here's the truth:
When people come to your website, they usually just want information. They are not looking to be entertained or impressed with your fancy web design skills. They want information. The quicker you give them information, the better.
Don't let the design of the website get in the way of providing the information!
If people want to be entertained, they can watch YouTube videos or play computer games. But if they come to your website looking for the best food to burn belly fat or how to earn money blogging, provide them that information. Don't turn it into an excuse to get all up in their face with loads of fancy images and animations.
Even with websites about famous people, you go there because you want to read information. You want to know about their latest work, you want to read about their biographical history, find out the latest news about them. You don't want to have to navigate your way through a bunch of animated stuff.
Now, let's take a look at an example of a GOOD website...
The second website was much better, although the header graphic could have had its height reduced by at least a third. At least I could find what I wanted here relatively easily. I also happen to personally like Mike Oldfield's music, especially tubular bells.
Thanks Marcus, "the times" and the designer websites are definitely "a changing!"
