Hi everyone, my name is Arthur and I'm very pleased to meet you all!
I decided recently to upgrade my profile and to trim the fat!

I have an extensive background in education and although I'm now officially "retired", I am still very active in a number of projects, perhaps too many! Although my first love is History, and will forever remain so, I also believe that the study of English and the ability to produce good content for the Internet is particularly important nowadays.

I also re-skilled later in Computer Studies and lectured for many years in Technical Colleges. I like to consider myself a well-balanced all-rounder!
In summary, it is Education, in all its variegated forms that drives my personal passion!

At present I enjoy blogging and am the creator of several "hobby" websites as well as a fully functional commercial website for a firm of accountants in Durban, Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.

I consider myself to be a "Knowledge Worker" having a passion for "lifelong learning" and the enhancement of community skills, which focuses on extracurricular coaching and all aspects of EQ (Emotional Intelligence or the practice of "mindfulness")

I believe the following quotation is a good fit, and best describes me:

“Communities of practice are groups of people who share a passion for something that they know how to do and they interact regularly to learn how to do it better.”
- Etienne Wenger

I think I have finally stumbled upon what I consider to be a suitable niche and hope to be actively blogging soon!

Ciao for now,
Arthur

Hello Arthur. I see you are a cat person. Your cat looks like my childhood kitty. My site is devoted to pet health and nutrition, specifically cats, though the supplements are made for dogs as well.

My husband is a History buff, majoring in history in college. We are both interested in education. I am nearing the end of my Master's program.

Nice to meet you. Welcome to WA!

Hi Jessica,
it's great to hear from you, yes I’ve always loved cats. "Tiger" is a particularly, exceptional and lovable cat in my opinion.

Apparently he belongs to a breed known as Bengal, and in my opinion is quite unique for a number of reasons (but then again I think most cat owners think their own pets are unique…… Lol!)
I’m sure you have come across the breed before…… Probably unnecessary for a person with your interests and in your field, but just google Bengal to find out more!

What I found particularly interesting about this breed is that they apparently have a natural immunity to feline leukemia.
I also believe that historians are another “breed” apart, and in my opinion they are heroes, largely unsung and unrecognized by the world at large…… Tell your husband that he has my commiserations…… Lol!

in my opinion, not all dried foods for cats are “equal” from a nutrition perspective, and at the moment I’m experimenting with various brands! Tiger is a fussy eater, but I have personally noticed an improvement in his awareness and general health once I introduced him to certain top brands.

Kind regards,
~Arthur

Yes, history is important, so important but under appreciated by most! My husband is very discouraged that his degree seems useless for finding jobs. My degree is in Anthropology, also important (the study and history of humans) but not in demand for finding a job! Luckily, I got into environmental regulatory compliance, GIS mapmaking, land use planning and the oil and gas worlds from an early age, so I don't rely on my degree.

We both work for the State of Alaska now.

My kitties are all rescues but we are fairly certain we have an American Shorthair (orange stripes), French Chartreiux mix (rare), and a Norwegian Forest Cat.

We feed them a grain-free, high quality dry food. I wrote a review of my trials with trying different foods on my website. We also give them wet food as a carrier for all of heir supplements such as one that dramatically helps with tooth and gum health. Our poor baby Tigger had teeth pulled every year by the vet before we found this supplement. Orange tabbies are prone to gum disease. He has had none pulled since we started the supplement. It is so successful the vet is now recommending it! This was my inspiration to start the website. I know problems like this are so common and I hope to help other pets and their owners.

Nice to meet you!
Jesica

Had a quick glance at your historybuffs website and bookmarked it. Many articles I would like to read when I have the time. Very interesting website.

Your passion for 'lifetime learning' reminds me of what my High School Principal said to my graduating class. It's the only thing I remember from his long speech but it has stayed with me through the decades.

(My high school back then, in Canada, was in a part of our city where most high school graduates either found jobs or took vocational courses. Very few could afford nor could their parents afford to send us to expensive universities. There were so such thing as community colleges back then, as in the USA. So, many of us went straight into the work force that summer after we graduated.)

And so, what our Principal told my High School graduation class, I think is very profound. . .

"Now, your education has ended but your learning has just begun."

Hi Monica, thanks for responding to my follow request and the honourable mention regarding my recent comment on Steve’s post, “Reading for Pleasure and Profit! “
My apologies for the delay in getting back to you, but I have had to contend with some gremlins in my computer system (I recently suffered a hard drive crash and lost most of my data.)
As a result, I have patiently been reconstructing the software architecture of my desktop machine.
Talk about “grunt work”!

I believe the blog forum here at W.A. is a great idea, and excellent training for developing one’s own ability to read and to write comments, but I do prefer genuine interaction as opposed to the “like” button, which I believe only goes part of the way.

Finding like-minded people on W.A. is always a thrill for me as my background in Education has prompted me to believe in genuine interaction in the form of debate, discussion, discourse etc.

Although a skeptic by nature, I personally believe in Miracles and the Power of Prayer as opposed to what I describe as “urban legend” and “new-age” stuff.

Thank you for your patience in reading this “semi-diatribe” and I would like to end off by exhorting you to continue “reading, writing and praying” (sounds a bit like the title of a recent novel, lol!) :))

Keep well.
Kind regards,
~Arthur

Hi Arthur, I like your quote you referenced because that is what WA is all about. Now, let me ask you a question. I see that you joined in 2014. How are you doing with WA? Just curious. Take care and I wish you all the best.
Reply
WillingToTry Premium
A good question Janice,

I have made some money through referrals, and although I have written quite a few websites, prior to joining W.A. they are not really effective revenue producers.

Although I am retired I am still very active in terms of educational projects as there is a dire need for ongoing education here in South Africa. I also act as a consultant in IT matters and this, together with the foregoing, coupled with tuition and training has conspired to retard my progress somewhat here at W.A.

However I have not lost my main passion which lies in the realm of writing and language and I have only recently discovered a related niche which I believe will work very well for me!

In terms of my goals, I've decided to make this the year of achievement!

Hay Arthur, thanks for following up on Nicki's blog. I was trying to make a point in a clumsy way. I attempted to clarify as follows.

Totally agree, however, part of the happiness equation is ambition. The search for inner peace and happiness is an ambition.

My point is that you cant sit still and be happy, we all have a goal. To be a better person and help people is an ambition/goal.

Nicki's post seemed to suggest that we should not want anything we don't have, however, we must have ambition.

Anyway, good to make your acquaintance and I am now a follower.

Hi, Arthur. Pardon me for not replying to your profile right away. This is the only time, I could sit down and work on my lessons here at WA
and answer all my e-mails. I have to manage my time wisely nowadays. Been very busy at my day job and managing the house as well. Enough for the long excuses :) I just want to say thank you for following me back and it's a pleasure to meet you. Look like I have met the physical counterpart of 'Google'. I believe the importance of Education and what it can wonderfully do to a person. The mere fact that a person knows how to read and write is more than enough for him to live and explore the beauty of the world. The idea of 'lifelong learning' should be a guiding principle to anyone who wish to learn. It is a continuous process and it doesn't discriminate age. Whether you are young or old, you have the right to continue studying and pursuing your dreams. I studied ' Mentorship' so that I could teach and facilitate nursing students in their learning in the operative setting. I thought them how to apply the 5 R's of Good Learning ( Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Resilience, Reasoning and Reflection). If they can achieve all these they will become good nurses someday. Compassion and Care will follow. Well, I think I made a blog comment already. I will just have to end my message by wishing you every success in all your online business ventures!
Adel :)

Hi Adel,

no need to apologise, I read your comment on my profile with great delight and it is really good to hear from you. Yes we have very busy lives and I commiserate!
I like your turn of phrase "the physical counterpart of Google" you should also include Wikipedia, my favourite online encyclopaedia!

Whenever I require additional information about a subject or have a question it's as simple as 1 to 3 to search Google and as you know, usually Wikipedia appears in the first 10 ranking positions.

Here in South Africa a number of enterprising rural schools have concluded a deal with MTN (ISP) for free bandwidth so that they can use Wikipedia and Google for learning purposes.

These are the poorest of the poor and I believe this is a step in the right direction (gladdens my educators heart)
I share your sentiments concerning reading and writing which I think are absolutely essential as they allow one to freely embrace the concept of lifelong learning, always bettering oneself, and being better equipped and able to help others. We are all teachers in this regard and our calling is to educate and be educated.

I particularly like your mention of the 5R's of good learning, and it is my belief that it is essential to have Compassionate and Caring Members as part of our society! Bravo!
If it any time I can be of help to you in any way, please don't hesitate to ask.
I likewise wish you every success in all your online endeavours. Please keep in touch.
Warm regards,
Arthur :)

Hi Jim,
I just wanted to record my appreciation of the kind remarks that you made about history and in particular the fact that you live only a short distance from Gettysburg!
I studied American history while at University and was particularly interested in the Gettysburg clash.
One thing that history has taught me is to be wary of taking sides and to try and maintain a lack of bias when studying and striving to understand it!
Although I enjoy blogging about history I have found that, sadly, the subject does not always garner much interest.
Most probably because it was badly taught during one's schooldays?

I'm convinced that the teaching of history requires the gift of imagination and an ability to understand it! It also requires great diligence and hard work from a research perspective.

You have no doubt read the famous Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Michael Shaara entitled "The Killer Angels" which I regard as a superb piece of historical/novel writing.

Likewise, I look forward to following your progress!

Kind regards
Arthur

I am well thanks Byron, just finished watching Jays webinar on fixing site errors.

Trust you are well and handling your plugin problems....I really have to start eliminating some on my main site....practice what I preach! :))

Its 3:00 am here in South Africa so I am going to crawl back to bed soon. If you would like to PM occasionally that would be great....I am a bit under pressure at the moment....took on a part time lecturing stint and am right in the middle of the exam frenzy this time of year....anyway...they say "no sympathy for self inflicted injuries!"

Ahh well, "this too shall pass!" (another favourite saying at the moment ) :))
Keep well and chat soon!
Kind regards

I get it Professor Arthur. Remember the Latin my Friend!

Indeed, we can PM, although I must confess, my life is rather upside down now as well.

Another favorite saying, "No rest for the wicked"

You and I have been rather bad boys haven't we?

A warm hello Arthur,

You have an impressive profile, which shows you have enjoyed your life - not something we can all claim! It is truly great to get to know you, Arthur.

Welcome to WA and thank you for your follow. I wish the very best of success for you here at WA and hope that your online objectives and dreams will be fully realized soon.

I don't know much (since you probably know a lot more than I would ever know), but I’ll be happy to share with you what I do know. Please give me a shout if I can be of any help and assistance to you. In addition, our great WA Community is always right beside you to provide you all the 24/7 support you may need to make your WA journey a joyous and successful one.

And an equally warm hello to you Jay, thank you for your kind words and wishes!
One thing I realize is that the older I get , the more I realize how little I actually know...... they say that Leonardo da Vinci was the worlds last great polymath, (literally "know it all") capable of understanding everything....
because the sum total of knowledge, as we understand it today has literally expanded exponentially since the days of the Renaissance!

Ahh well, I turn for comfort to a famous quote by Richard Feynmann the Nobel Laureate physicist who said, with great humility:
“I can live with doubt and uncertainty and not knowing. I think it is much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers that might be wrong."
kind regards,
~Arthur

Hi again Arthur,

Thank you for your gracious response. I definitely like the way you convey your thoughts and passion in your words, including the lovely quotes - they get to the heart of the matter.

And, yes, you're right... The older we get, the more we realize how much we don't know... PLUS, (at least in my case) how much we have missed in life, by not having taken the time to impact someone else's life... "Aspire to inspire, before you expire!"

With my best for your well being and success,
Jay Barnelli

Thanks for your comment Byron, I am fascinated with regard to your interest in South African military ventures of the 70's and 80's especially as the South Africa border war is now dubbed "an unpopular war"
There is no doubt in my mind that warfare actually resolves nothing, despite the technological spinoff that society gains from it!
At the end of the day, it is often difficult to remain objective when studying military history whether it be ancient or more recent!

For me, one of the most important questions remains, does warfare ever really solve problems? Many researchers believe that it only lays the foundations for further bitter conflicts. In essence we have 'learnt' nothing! (UK writing convention)
"If you want to learn how to make mistakes on a colossal scale, human history about conflict is probably your best starting point.
This ongoing horror story is a virtual "How To" manual for failure. In my opinion the 20th century started with a disaster and simply got worse over time."

By the way Arthur, I love military history as well. While my history of South African military history is not great, I have read many books, on the series of events during the Rhodesian and South African military ventures during the 70ties and early 1980ties.

Fantastic stories of some of the best military formations ever.

See you later!

Once one is a paying affiliate can one cancel ones status for a few months or two and join again at a later date?
Reply
skc Premium
Arthur,
I got this from Carson which explains it all.

Hey Shawn,

The payment here at Wealthy Affiliate is a monthly subscription. You can always cancel your billing, take a break, then come back at a later date. It's totally flexible and you're in control of how you want the billing to work.

Each time you setup payment it's a subscription, so it's up to you to stop it if you wish. It's all managed from your account settings here at WA, so it's easy to do.

You're going to Love Premium and it's going to open the full potential of the Wealthy Affiliate platform. You can't build and run a business anywhere else online for less. Everything is 100% included.

Cheers,

Carson

Yes, and I believe you can keep your username and your followers and your blogs... but if you are hosting websites here, they'll only be hosted for 30 days after you've stopped paying for your membership. This is to give you time to move your site(s) to another hosting provider.

It seems one can join, on an intermittent monthly basis. This would suit me considering my erratic work situation. Am still tempted to start by taking up the $19 intro offer and see how it goes from there. (Have 3 days left to decide!)

Debbi or is it Sue?
Quite a few people have had similar things to say about History and I think some of the reasons may be that as they become older or more "mature" they appreciate its complexity and learn to detect things like bias etc, more readily!
Another reason for dislike , especially at school level could be that the subject was taught in a boring manner with little insight and no passion!
One of my History professors was fond of rephrasing Henry Fords saying that "History was bunk" , as: "Bunk!->, deBunk!-> , reBunk! ->
Keep exercising your "right Brain" (but don't neglect your left, you are definitely "in a class of your own!") Best wishes.
