But Doesn't Wealthy Affiliate Back up My Site?

Yes it does and this should always be your first port of call.

WA backs up all the sites they host on their own servers and they keep the backup files for a number of days.

But there are a couple of issues with relying on this alone.

1. Timing

Wealthy Affiliate will backup your websites once a day, typically in the evening when traffic is lighter. But what if you've just spent 4 hours creating and publishing your best post ever. It may be a full day away from being backed up by your web host. But you can back it up right now.

2. A Dispute

It won't happen with the helpful, personal approach taken by Wealthy Affiliate, but some web hosts have been known to cut off access to your site if you are in dispute with them, irrespective of who's in the right. Having your own backup gives you the upper hand, as you can always use it to transfer your website to another web host. That can be more difficult if your web host is also your domain name registrar. That's why I like to keep them separate.

3. Another Question of Timing

What if you've let your payment to your web host lapse and have simply forgotten about this particular website? It's not a dispute, but your website is simply gone and there is no way of getting it back,

4. Your Website's Been Hacked

Any website can be hacked, typically through a weakness in a plugin. The hack can prevent you from accessing it and it can, for example, redirect visitors to another site or to a number of other sites by rotation. Your chances of getting help from any of those sites are slim to none.

Your only hope is to restore from backup.

You may be able to do this from your web host's backup - but not if the hack got into your site before the oldest backup. And if it's a Trojan, that will almost certainly be the case.

But if you've got your own backup, you're set.

Unfortunately, Phil, I am finding that this procedure no longer works for me. The plugins seem to be blocked by WA.
If you have an opportunity, I would like to hear if you or anyone else has encountered these problems.
I tried another solution called Updraft and received the same error saying it was blocked. I could not even activate the plugin.
I tried to copy through FTP using Filezilla and received a message that over 5000 out of roughly 7800 files failed to copy to the destination drive.
I have since contacted site support to ask what solution will work. I am waiting on a response.

Best regards, Matt

WA advised some time ago that they were blocking backup plugins. I disagreed with them but understood their reasons, as some users have little idea of what they are doing and overload the server.

I have around 30 websites with some half of them hosted at WA. WA unblocked the backup plugin on all of them at my request.

You need to contact Site Support and ask them to unblock the plugin. Assure them you will delete old backups from the server. Ask me if you don't know how to do this.

FileZilla, while a great program, is not a suitable solution for backup.

Hey Phil,

I performed all the steps you have outlined in this lesson, but I have some questions about how to open the file after it's downloaded to my computer.

Are you familiar with what app or program I'll need to open the files on my computer once it's been downloaded?

Help is much appreciated!

You don't need to open them, Barbara,

Just keep them so you can restore your website in an emergency or transfer it to another web host.

You use the same plugin to restore as you did to back up.

A timely subject, with the new version of WP just out. Yes, I updated today. I use the UpdraftPlus plugin, which was recommended to me by a couple of people. It does a fine job.

Marion Black recommends backing up your site every day, and I can understand why. If you do it every day, you are much less apt to see your hard work destroyed because you just didn't bother. That would indeed be distressing.

I looked at Updraft years ago, but found its restore unreliable and that is in fact the most important aspect of a backup/restore app. It may of course be fine now and I'll explore that as a separate issue. But I've done lots of restores with AIO WP Migration without any issues.

I backup my sites as soon as I've made a change I'd hate to lose.
