WP CLONE by WP Academy is a great plugin that will allow you to backup and download your wordpress site to your computer. It can also be used to restore a website or transfer to another host or domain.

WP CLONE or XML EXPORT?

I created this short video after seeing many people talk and ask questions about the builtin feature of wordpress. Tools/Export

This is a great feature and with a few clicks you can download an xml file containing all of your sites content. (posts, pages, custom post types, comments, custom fields, categories, tags, custom taxonomies, and users)

But it doesn't backup your themes, plugins, uploads and custom changes or setting.

WP CLONE with a few clicks will backup your database and the entire content of your wp-content folder. It then compresses everything into a .zip file for you to download.

Do I Even Need To Backup My Website?

It's all optional and Wealthy Affiliate hosting has it's own backup system in place. I personally like to backup my own sites and client sites because it gives me that extra peace of mind knowing that I have my own backup to fall back on.

Plus for someone like myself, if I break something I can quickly access my backups and fix the problem myself.

Automated Wordpress Backup To DropBox

If you want to automate the whole backup process you can do this with another plugin called BackWpUp. I've created a training covering how to and you can view it here:

-------------

"Error Message : MySQL server has gone away"

If you get the error "MySQL server has gone away" when you attempt a backup. Please try the following.

1: Below the blue "Create Backup" button, click on "Advanced Setting".

2: Enter 256 in both of the following fields.

  • Maximum memory limit = 256

  • Script execution time = 256

Scroll down and try the backup again.

Will this work? I'm not sure if it will work for you, but a larger than normal test site I have on WA hosting just returned the same error for me. After making the following advanced changes I was able to create a backup. Backup size was 51MB

Watched the tutorial. Great as usual! That's my new way to back up sites! Quick, easy and no backing up to DropBox!

I do have another question for you Craig,

My brother did something really stupid. He had an add-on domain named after the root. Well the inevitable happened - he deleted the wrong one and wiped out everything with the click of a mouse - including a website I worked on for some time. Now, both our faults for not backing it up, my brother archived the database. It's not been exported or anything. Can this database be fixed and made to work again?

With only the database not all is lost, you can try and rebuild the site, but you would need to find and add all the images etc.
Email me the database if you want and I'll see what I can do to help.

I greatly appreciate it! I will need an email address to send it to you. It will be zipped as my brother sent it to me. If I had the content to it, I would be able to work through restoring the site's styling, etc. Would just be happy to get the content back.

I tried backing up with this new plugin but when I hit the backup button, nothing happens. I've tried it three times. There was something in there about it not being used on a large site. I guess my site might be too large for it.

I wondered about the xml method. I tried asking questions about this yesterday but it, I believe is still an unanswered question. Thanks for this tutorial!

BackWpUp, for some reason isn't working very well for me. I don't know if it's that or DropBox. I have not dug into it very far.

How does WP Clone compare with BackWpUp? This question for anyone.

Hi Daniel,
I created this video partly because of your question yesterday.
Wp Clone has no automation but it's great for moving site or creating a quick backup.

Yeah, I don't care about automation. I like this much better and would rather do it manually. This way I know more of what's going on with backups. The drop box has not been doing the job and hasn't been since late last year. I tried to fix the problem but it was taking way too much time, so I went ahead and just started using the xml method. It came to mind a few days ago and is when I asked about it because I had the impression that this was not complete, and thanks for answering my question! Glad it's here to help more people like me with this issue.

In regards to the backup, you may need to exclude a few folders especially if you've used other backup and cache type plugins.

You may have a few folders/directories that contain several backup zip files etc resulting in huge a total file.

Where are these directories? I thought they were all going on DropBox - at least for as long as they were. So I have backups uploaded to my site?

Hi Craig. Looks like another great tutorial. Just wondering if I already have BackWPup should I leave things alone or switch to WP Clone? Everything has been fine since last fall BTW. These backups are a must as far as I'm concerned.

Hi Rick, If backwpup is working for you, then no need to use this plugin.

OK, thanks Craig. I'll try WP Clone on a new site I'm working on.
