This is a technique for PPC advertisers that will allow you to track which EXACT keywords are leading to the highest lead conversion rates. Typically when people think of tracking conversions, they think of sales. However, when you are building a list, the first thing you need to get converting are the pages in which your web forms are on (squeeze pages or otherwise).

Without converting leads, you will never have the opportunity to convert sales.

Let that soak in for a second. You need someone to take action (sign-up to your email list) and become a lead before you can create success with a funnel. The same way that you need traffic, before you can get leads.

Alright, so this is what we want to do. Instead of tracking sales, which requires you to have your Google (or otherwise) Conversion Tracking Code on the order confirmation page, we are going to track lead conversions by putting the code on the lead confirmation page. Any guesses as to which page that is?

The THANK YOU page. Your website should have this page within it:

http://yourdomain.com/thank-you/

This is going to be the "Thank You" page that you set-up in Aweber.

The next thing you need to do is get your Google Conversion Code (within your Adwords account). If you are using Yahoo Search Marketing or MSN Adcenter, you will grab the code from there, but for this example I am going to show where to grab it within Google Adwords.

Login to your Adwords Account and click "Conversions" under the Report tab.

Click "New Conversion".

You will then want to create an Action Name, this can be whatever you like. The Tracking Purpose should then be set to Lead.

This will take you to the Code Settings page. You can disregard any of these fields and simply click "Save and get code".

The code that you need to add to your Thank You page is revealed. What you need to do is copy this entire block of code and paste it within the " tags within your HTML in the WordPress ad min area.

Now you will need to login to your WordPress admin (wp-admin) area and click on your Thank You page within your list of Pages -> Edit (as shown below).

Now you want to click on the HTML tab to go into the code. This is where you will paste the conversion tracking code Google gave you.

Paste the Google Conversion Code at the very end of this page.

And there you have it. Now every time that someone lands on this page that came from one of your Google PPC ads, it will show up within your Adwords account as a conversion under the EXACT keyword that generated the lead. Cool stuff!
