Offensive Blogs and Comments
So here we are at WA, training, learning and helping each other out on a regular basis. Personally I have found myself blogging and commenting on things more than I ever have before in my life, social networks included. With this extra interaction comes the problem of interpretation! Since SMS text messaging and email became the 'norm' it has always concerned me how a simple piece of text can be taken in so many different ways depending on who is reading it and how they perceive it! For a start we are all different so we see and read things in different ways. In real life I like to use sarcasm as a tool in my comedy routine which is quite acceptable to others, especially after they see the cheesy grin at precisely the right moment! Unfortunately sarcasm doesn't work so well online! I think a very valuable tool online is the good old emoticon;
"a metacommunicative pictorial representation of a facial expression which in the absence of body language and prosody serves to draw a receiver's attention to the tenor or temper of a sender's nominal verbal communication, changing and improving its interpretation"
OK, OK, yes, I looked it up on Wikipedia but that's irrelevant! I guess my point here is that a little bit of good old fashioned understanding and thoughtfulness along with a perfectly placed emoticon can help us all get our messages across in the right spirit without the risk of misinterpretation!
Note! I will not be responding to any insulting, sarcastic or offensive comments ;) Cheers

Hey, doesn't anybody sleep? It's 5:30 am as I'm typing this and yet you have half a dozen comments already.
Texting can be a problem too. My sister texted me awhile back and I texted back with a furious reply. Turns out I misinterpreted things. OOPS!!! Good post
I forget the actual number, but it's something like 10% of actual communication is the words...so your point is well taken! Ansley
You're absolutely right. True communication is more than the spoken/written word, it's body language and tone. When you can't see the persons face or hear the tone of their voice to know that they're just kidding, it can cause a lot of trouble. We must remain aware of that when e-mailing and commenting. Good point you brought up. Debbi
lol.. great one. I do have one blog which I call my personal blog with the other side of me... I rant a lot and not to mention sarcasm notes. But only on that particular site. As for others, I'm as sweet as an angel. :D
I'm with you TJ! I think writing in simple terms and plain language does not leave too much room for ambiguity.
Hi TJ!
The key of all that you mention is the the "perception" of others! Each one perceives things according to their own particular circumstances; each person 'seasons' what they read with their own emotions... and thus words could be easily misinterpreted. This is a human thing! hahaha. I agree totally with you that offensive and sarcastic comments should be ignored! -
You've given me an idea for my next blog! Have you heard of THE FOUR AGREEMENTS? Be attentive to my next blog where I'mm talk a bit about them!
Cheers!
Hi Gisela, no I don't believe I have heard of THE FOUR AGREEMENTS but now I am intrigued, I look forward to your blog! Thanks TJ
!@#% you Stevenson!
LOL! Just kidding ;)
Good post. I add so many of those things sometimes I think I am overdoing it, and still people think I am just a !@#%.
Good post, and as you have a wide following I would just like to say to y'all. I would take a bullet for most people, because that is just the sort of person I am, so please don't take offense to anything I write. I am just blunt as a banana, but I mean no harm.
Will be looking inwardly to take my own advice too.
Good on ya TJ, great post ;)
Love ya work, stay frosty

G'day Todd, great post and I think you got it right. Written communication loses that element of body language or non-verbal that we get in face to face talk. Tone, timbre, gestures and expression are lost, but clever writing brings in a new dimension that simulates those non-verbals - which is what you have done here.
Good stuff mate!
I am from mid-North South Aussie, wheat-belt area. I have a son in Qld and will be heading over to the Gold Coast in early July for a conference. If you are anywhere near there, let me know and we could do a few ales and a steak?
Keep blogging mate, it's a gift!
Thanks Geoff, a few ales and a steak sounds great, unfortunately I live just south of Sydney so I will probably only see your plane fly over!
