Forced Vacation - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Our DNA eventually catches up with us. If we are lucky we can get to retirement age but then are often forced into actual retirement by our employer, our health circumstances, or just feeling like it is time to quit and "take it easy."

Then what?

I had a recent "health challenge" a few months ago and was forced into a "vacation" at home while I recovered from a heart attack. It was serious, but I survived and eventually got over the side effects of new medications and of the heart attack itself.

I was lucky to recover my health.

But one thing I quickly learned while being forced to be in a "mini-retirement" for a few weeks while recovering was that I did not want to retire! Not yet, anyway.

I am used to working hard and just staying at home was just not my idea of good times.

Also there is the little thing of money. I still have kids in college who depend on the Bank of Dad for their tuition and other expenses. They did not relish the idea of being cut off from their income source (and maybe having to get a J.O.B. to support themselves).

The good part of this whole new adventure is finding a place like WA where it is realistically possible to gain a significant income to take care of my kids and keep the Bank of Dad financially stable.

And keeping the dream of (eventual) retirement on my own terms a real possibility.

This is the human side of WA - the good part of this little story. The part where life can be lived a little better, family can be supported, and choices made on your own terms and not dictated entirely by monetary considerations.

You just never know when new life challenges come up - keeping another challenge for the next entry.

Wow! What a great post!

I totally can relate with the forced "vacation" and finding a great hub online here at WA.

I also have a current pregnancy complication, which requires bedrest most of the time.
So, coming across WA and working on my online business in my bed had kept my sanity intact. 😀

Keep up the good work.
Wishing you great success.

God bless,
Che

Thank you for the encouraging words.

The forced vacation can certainly take the wind out of your sails.

Having a backup, emergency plan is a great idea!.

Coming across WA is a great solution to this problem.

Best of luck with the pregnancy - wish you all the success on WA possible.

God be with you!

Thank you very much 👼

Hi David
Life can deal out some tricky situations alright and having Wa to be a part of and building a great business will give you so many positive things to focus on as you move forward
Wishing you all the very best
Vicki

Thanks for the encouraging words. I am hopeful to find that balance between personal enjoyment and personal productivity.

I'm absolutely sure you will - Make your plan and self-management will be your friend

Life really does have a way of telling us that we should slow down, not necessarily stop, but definitely slow down and change a few habits. Great that you have recovered and seeking to retire on your own terms. Keep that dream alive David.

One thing about life is that it can certainly knock you down - but it does not have to knock you out.

I enjoy working here at WA. It is fun to interact with other people from around the world and write about the things you like.

Everyone is basically the same; we all want family, friends, some financial security, and health. We have a community here of like-minded individuals who work together for each other's success.

What could be better!

Again, thanks for your comments - but trying to slow down is really hard but I suppose necessary; at least for a while!

It is very hard David to go from 100 mph to 75mph, but is what we must do or do it smarter, balcancing work and life and somewhere in between finding time for personal enjoyment. It gets worse when you retire.

I can see how slowing down gets worse with retirement, but also how balance in life is important.

It is also hard to find that demarcation between goal achievement and personal enjoyment - and that demarcation changes as you go through life.

Thanks for the insight!

Hi David this is exactly the right place for you to make your life better! Good luck:)
Cass

Thank you so much for your kind words. I am hoping to not have any more forced "vacations" at least not in my near future.

Thanks for your kind words!

Dave.
