About Tgtobb
Joined February 2016
We work with homeless and slum-dwelling families in and around Bangkok, Thailand for about 30 years now. Currently, we are planning a major project to profile our local slum community needs in hopes that we can help other community development groups and individuals to design and implement better and more sustainable projects for the areas where they are working. The communities too often face a problem of projects designed and implemented that do not actually reach out to their greatest needs.

You are doing wonderful work! I am following you and I look forward to learning more about your work and ways to help.

Your goals are inspirational and moving:
"I don't think or care much about the money aspects. My focus and passion are on working with people...helping them find better solutions to their needs."

Just a point to consider along with your goals: the more you are able to create an income online, including ways to develop more sponsorship/charitable support (donations from other people) for the families and homeless people you are helping, the more you will be able to help these people in need.

So from that aspect, I just wanted to mention that it's not a bad thing to care about and focus on the money aspects, because more money will be able to help you help more people.
The work you are doing/building here through WA training can help you to increase the impact of your wonderful work.

I am really looking forward to learning more and following your successes in furtherance of your passion to help people.

Hi Roger,
Thanks for the follow. Following you back.

Reading your bio, I see that you are a man after my own heart. That's incredible 30 years!! Are you based in Thailand or do you visit?

My first mission trip was to Jamaica going 10+ years now.

I loved it and I've since been to Africa.

My desire is to spend more time in communities helping those less fortunate than myself.

I would love to hear about your projects.

Best wishes!

LOL, I forgot how to get home! The last 30 years have been continuous between Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand, first returning to VN in the 1980s to build a small medical clinic in the town I was stationed in during the war, the first physical reconstruction project by any American organization since the end of the war. We accomplished that with a dozen or so US combat veterans and an even mix of Vietcong and North Vietnamese Army veterans. :-) But it seems the world paid no attention to the lessons we taught. :-(

It's really easy to do @JackieSmith, just get busy doing anything that needs to be done, and keep looking forward. :-) Don't try to lead the masses, just follow the needs and let the masses catch up whenever they finally get it figured out.

Hi! Roger,
What an inspiring bio, reflecting how fortunate we are at a right time in a right place under a right circumstance. So, we are not born equal, though equal to vote under so-called democracy, which is governed by the collective emperor of party elites...

Wish you the best there; I respect your dedication.

Hi Roger,

I am guessing it is Roger, if not all the others are wrong he he.

Ahh, the homeless. When I am in Cebu Philippines on a Saturday I usually spend $30 Ozzy money and buy bread with custard and water to feed the street people when they come out at night and sleep on their cardboard sheets. Saves eating off the rubbish that is piled up on the street most Saturday nights.

A lot of Leprosy too which I imagine Bangkok would also possess. Many locals haven't got a clue about it and they walk past it every day.

I thank you for following me and good luck with the homeless. I do know that some of the street kids like to remain homeless and live with the other orphans with whom they grew up with on the streets.

On a brighter note, I wish you the best in all aspects of life.

Cheers and great to meet you.

To a certain extent you are correct about kids wanting to stay on the streets, but in my findings, by digging deeper the reasons are usually abandonment, abuse drugs or alcohol. This is not nearly as prevalent as it was 30 years ago when I first came. Food is usually not an issue as money is usually not an issue, but I have always used the food as a means to begin a new relationship. The big carrot is school because virtually all kids want to go to school even if only to get new clothes and goof off. I put them in school only if they are either in their family setting or if that is not safe, then an alternative family setting from street friends, that works extremely well!

Yes, leprosy is a major source for homeless, but not because of reasons most people think. The leprosy centers here are very well supported and maintained by foundations and church groups, but they don't provide any social stimulation to speak of at all! The old folks hit the streets to "get a life", everything at the center is free and plenty of it, they just want to have fun, play cards, and party a bit, you know, kind of like "normal" people. :-)

I don't travel, but if you ever get to Bangkok let me know you're coming. I think we could have some enjoyable conversations. :-)

Wishing you much success. My website is based on crafts and the supplies for the ribbon yarn is from India and Nepal and provides women in poverty with an opportunity to earn an income to support themselves and their families.

In this way, I can relate to your goal of more sustainable projects for those in need.

This is a very supportive community in helping each other build our websites. I have asked many 'beginner' questions and always received helpful answers.

Take care.

Thanks, Phil, I have used the BKKhooker handle years ago but the response was rather so-so. Also, it translates rather poorly in Thai, especially for someone working with Thai 'street workers', including children! Some day maybe I'll play with it again, we card-carrying members of the Olde Phartes Generation can often cut our own slack.

I do have a rather major project I work on as time permits that will involve demographic mapping of BKK slums and the creating of a database from that information that will hopefully be sellable/rentable to NGOs and organizations who want to design their projects around the realities that interest them, and also be able to pick from the communities of greatest need. I think that will need a multi-level membership platform either for subscription or at least sorting medical workers away from nursery care, and addiction focused folks etc. These skill sets are all well beyond my skill or energy levels these days :-( Thoughts, prayers, suggestions, participation always welcome :-)

You would not believe the failure rate and poorly designed projects from people who want to micromanage cross-cultural areas they have no concept at all of! Very few people need rescuing, while all of us need friendly understanding and encouragement!

understand about the handle.
good luck with your 'part time' project.
i know how difficult it is trying to get a few engineers working together. maybe you can find the skills base on here to assist you with what you need?
as you say most people don't appreciate what they have.
have fun
