We got Twitter messages informing us of the indexing problems that commenced on 22 / 23 September. We understood that those were resolved by last week.

Twitter has NEVER messaged me regarding Google issues, ever.

Sorry for delayed response - dealing with a funeral over the weekend.
Maybe I used the wrong or vague wording. The Twitter messages come from Google SearchLiaison (@searchliaison). I think this is one of the official Google Twitter accounts.

Still sounds like a spammer Teboho. No one simply reaches out to another Twitter user claiming that your website has errors. Sorry to have to inform you, but there are a LOT of fraudulent Twitter accounts.
If you "think" something is real, you need to be certain, first and foremost, else ignore it all together.
Google does NOT reach out to ANYONE on Twitter.
we may not be understanding each other. Google SearchLiaison were not reaching out to me about my website. They were sending out an explanation (to the whole world) after receiving a lot of complaints and queries about URLs that were suddenly dropping out of sight (being "de-indexed").
They wrote the message on their account, for the benefit of ALL Twitter users who follow Google SearchLiaison. The message was that there were problems with 1. indexing and 2. canonicalization. And they kept updating us as the problems became 50% fixed, 99% fixed, etc. I wasn't a follower then, but saw the thread being quoted in the news. That's when I began to follow them.
It is this very Twitter account (Google SearchLiaison) that subsequently informed the international community when Google suspended its "Request Indexing" feature on GSC. And indeed, that feature has not been available since then. @RamiSociable wrote a blog post about that suspension on the same day, which you can check out.
It's a pity I can't provide the URLs to the news items I referred to above, or to RamiSociable's post.
I think Google SearchLiaison (@searchliaison) is a genuine, legit account. Please try to search for (± follow) it on Twitter.

Google are updating at the minute, so there will no doubt be a few problems over the next few weeks.

Good morning. Each time you write a new post submit a new sitemap. This way Google will crawl your site and index your new content.

I have been doing that diligently for about 3 months now, for both websites. That's why the articles were being indexed in 1-4 days, prior to October 19th.
Good to know. I often wonder if Google is redoing things because of the lawsuit they are in. Covering themselves in preparation. But this is only speculation.

UPDATE 1/11/2020:
Thanks everyone for your input concerning this question. After dealing with a family funeral over the weekend, I discover that ALL of the articles I was wondering about, have been indexed, WITHIN 24 HOURS.
So it seems the problem was with GSC. Hopefully they have finished upgrading, and hopefully we are now past those problems!
