The Relevancy of A Content – the X-Factor

In the SEO rabbit hole, one could easily get drowned in a sea of seemingly abstract variables that account for a page ranking the way it does in search results for specific search queries. These variables are responsible for determining the position of a site in the search pages when you perform a search. Relevance, they say is the measure of how appropriate a given page is for a given query. And it is such a vague concept that to a beginner, deciphering it from the SEO context is almost akin to decrypting the Caesar Cipher. What we do know for certain is that Google no more relies on the narrow concept of one-on-one keyword matching technique to throw up results based on a user’s search query. Does this mean the keyword research or targeting keywords is taking the backseat in our SEO campaign? Definitely, not. But this only means there are hundreds, nay, thousands of metrics involved in the ranking factor.

The best advice one can give to a beginner (like myself) is to not rush into things that need time to grow. And website needs time to grow. SEO is a constantly shifting terrain and it will change as long as search engines change. They say in between the big Google algorithm updates, there are hundreds of smaller updates and these changes happen almost everyday. So, instead of trying to game the system through ‘legit’ SEO efforts, what we can do are a few things that are within our conrol. Simple things like:

  • Optimise your page for humans first instead of search engines. Create good-quality content that is educational and personal. Have a conversational tone.
  • Have a mix of both informational and commercial keywords. Informational keywords usually begin with “how to…”, “what are…” whereas commercial keywords mostly begin with “best…”, “top 10…”.
  • Pay attention to the site speed. You will be ignoring it at your own peril.
  • Make your pages mobile-friendly. If the theme used is the culprit, change it.
  • Stay within the niche. Do not stray from the niche (this is important).
  • Stick to the lessons here in Wealthy Affiliate. The resources are here itself.
  • Do not get depressed when you do not see your post on page 1 immediately.

Now, this brings me to the topic in the title of this post, “the relevancy of a page”. What the hell does that mean? How do I make my page relevant so that it matches with a user’s search query? I seriously don’t know. I will update here with a post someday when I get to the bottom of it. For the moment, keep learning.

[P.S.: The author apologises for a somewhat misleading blog title and for not coming up with anything useful regarding page relevance in this post. This is because he, himself, is still in the process of learning.]

Yes, that indeed is the question. Did you give the reader what they expected when they typed that keyword into a search engine?

As long as you ask that question before you start writing, while you're writing and at the end of your post, and you're as satisfied as you can be that you've given them what they expect, then is not much more you can do.
