Hello WA community,

I was told that it is a good idea to install and submit a sitemap to Google and Bing. The only problem is, I know nothing about sitemaps. Can someone please help me? Thank You

I am trying to create a sitemap within SEO and after clicking update then clicking view, I get the following message:"This XML file does not appear to have any style information associated with it. The document tree is shown below." with nothing showing. What am I doing wrong?

Now, when I go to Google Search Console - Crawl - Sitemaps, and test I get this error message: "1

Errors
Empty Sitemap
Your Sitemap does not contain any URLs. Please validate and resubmit your Sitemap." How is it possible I don't have any URL's? How do I fix this?

Keep up the great work!

Will do. Happy Holidays!

Thanks for responding everyone. I was successful at installing and submitting my sitemap to Google. Next up: Bing

If you used the first plugin i suggested, it submits them for you, do you really want to manually do it each time you create a blog post, webmaster has restrictions on how many times a month you can send them requests.

Good goin Success! If you keep up at this pace & intensity (burning the midnight oil), You'll be fine in no time. It's fun, isn't it?

@ChrisLanauze
Yes I did install and activate that particular (3.4 version).

@MD_Incognito
Absolutely. Consistency is key.

This one always motivates me:

Cool, well you certainly should setup webmaster tools for extra benefits if you haven't already, I wrote an extensive comment on this on https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/ramccracken/blog/bounce-rate-issues-and-building-traffic-3rd-month-over-quadruple just keep scrolling down till you find me in the comments, or click ctrl f on your keyboard and type in chris, you'll find me then.

Hey Success Inc, Yoast is great if you can wrap your head round it, but if your following the training you will be recommended the all in one seo plugin, so in this case use this great xml plugin, and you will see results, http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/ Ps if you are searching for wordpress plugins, make sure to include wordpress and plugin and you'll get instant results, ie wordpress plugin xml-sitemap first one, i have used this plugin by arne on all my sites, works a charm. Ps if you got lots of video on your site, then get your self this http://wordpress.org/plugins/xml-sitemaps-for-videos/ and if you are using mobile this http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-mobile-sitemap/ and images this http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-image-sitemap/ and make sure you sign up to google webmasters so you can manually submit the files as well, It helped my site get indexed in a day.

I've been trying to figure out how to create and submit a site map for days now. http://wordpress.org/plugins/google-sitemap-generator/ - that app did the trick. Thanks for the help!

Since writing this response, All in One SEO now includes sitemaps and social meta data in the free version all you have to do is activate it to have it show up in the settings tab. Navigate to All in one tab, and click on feature manager. click activate for social, site map, and performance manager is useful if you need to tweak your site to run woo-commerce. They even have and import export function now, so you can setup your defaults, and import them into your other sites. The main benefit, like Yoast, is to reduce the amount of plugins in your WordPress site, reducing bloat and speeding up page load speeds.

Sorry! I forgot the link - here ya go;

Well, I use SEO by Yoast (in my opinion, THE BEST *FREE* all-in-one SEO plugin available on wordpress). It has a built-in XML sitemaps feature.

You may want to look into it. If not for your current site, then maybe for one in the near future. I won't consider anything else personally. It's that good.

There's a tutorial here for a plug-in for it: https://my.wealthyaffiliate.com/training/set-up-a-wordpress-website-complete-guide/google-xml-sitemaps-installation-guide

Cheers, Mark

Just type "sitemap" in the search bar above. :) Rich.
