Feeling Vulnerable

Kyle encourages us to establish a presence on social media, Facebook and Google+ are two that I have focused on. Faithful to his instructions I have posted my image and written an honest human description of myself, who and what I am. These are supposed to establish trust and be the basis of a reader/author relationship.

The problem is that instead of finding new consumers for my blog, I am getting hit on. Every week I'm getting friend requests from men I don't know. They say they want to "get to know me".

I am a 65 year old career woman, and a partner in a 35 year happy ongoing marriage. I have no time and no interest in developing a "friendship" with a man who uses Facebook for a dating service.

How do they find me?

I am really unclear how this is going to help me get traffic for my website.

In addition, I feel quite vulnerable when they know so much about me.

I'm tempted to close both those social media accounts.

Any thoughts on this would be welcome.

Thanks,

Stephanie

Hey Stephanie
I'm not hitting on you but, just joking just joking
Gordi and the rest are right here, you are in the drivers seat, you pick and choose, when these dirt balls instantly hit on you just ignore them, in the past I posted some of the soaps and spoons I made on social media, and boy did they come out of the woodwork
telling me they have made better and why would anyone want to buy my spoons, and you know what I retreated and quit posting pics of the stuff I made, then slowly I realized ( I mean a long time I didn't post pics) (that these trolls) unhappy individuals are a pretty sad example of people, maybe you can help them get counseling (LOL)
Stephanie in the end do what you do, do it good, ignore the jerks and up lift the ones that praise you, They don't make your day we do.
My Best to you
Rall

Well you know, not everyone is honest. A lot of people can find you through friends'. friends' friends and such. The good thing is, you dont have to accept every friend request, I surely don't

This is one issue on social media. We become so vulnerable as we can never tell who stumbles upon our account. You can set up your account privacy settings to "Friends" only so that only your friends can see you.

Of course, you can create a separate fanpage for your business to promote your website and what you are doing. The images may be about your niche.

I'd like a dollar for every 'general' who finds me on Skype and wants to start a conversation. Their rank is never any lower than general, I wonder why. ◕ ‿ ◕❀

That's funny Marion. lol

Oh, I've had a few generals too! I mean, not literally, you know what I mean! I'll shut up now.....

Haha...this would be nice!

I got the same Stephanie and did what Aiden has suggested. It works fine, I've haven't been proposed to for a while!

What a shame Kathy! Haha

I know, it's terrible!
Seriously though, it freaked me out, I got the same on G+. I've used FB for years and never had a problem before I got into IM!

Haha I'd take it as a compliment and leave it at that :)

Aiden, The truth is it's not a compliment, It's tedious and breeds distrust and questionable intentions. I'm here learning and doing internet marketing for my reasons none of which have anything to do with dodging amorous advances.

Thanks Kathy, I'll take Aiden's suggestions as well.

Fair enough Stephanie! I guess not having it happen to me has limited my knowledge on the subject, I guess it is a form of harassment and sorry if I made you feel uneasy!

On Google+ you can report them and give reasons why, not sure what happens after that but yeah.

I did report a guy who kept posting unapropriate pictures on a community I was part of on Google+, not that I go looking but I haven't seen him around since, so I'm guessing it works.

Hey Stephanie, want to go on a date? Haha, sorry.. couldn't resist..

There are usually options to block people from finding your personal page on these networks "only allow friends to view my page" etc. On Facebook you can hide your profile from search.

If it is your business page for your blog then I'd suggest adding a profile image that is an image to do with your blog or industry that way it would help hide you, perhaps use your real name if you wanted and leave your picture for the About Me page on your blog.

Hope this helps! (also hope my little joke at the start doesn't stir up any negative feelings!!)

Aiden, why you insensitive @##$^&3 so and so! LOL Only kidding. Thanks for your suggestions, I'll follow up on them. Best, Stephanie

Haha! Hope you had a giggle anyhow. Wonder what people think when I add them if they've liked my photos or commented on a post? Haha oh well I live on the thought that my intenations are honest, it's their mind that thinks differently if they don't accept my invitation to connect

I usually "follow" someone who's "liked" me. I'm not concerned if they "follow" me back. I just checked out your sight, Aiden. It has a very soothing energy. I like that you are leaving enticing snippets of posts
with an offer to deliver the balance of the post in exchange for an email address. I had forgotten about "the list" factor. Sigh! ... so many angles to be considered. I like the site very much, though.

Thanks Stephenie I really appreciate you taking the time to have a look at my site. I love the soothing effect :). Haha yeah I am yet to take full advantage of my list of 3 people but I will get there mark my words haha

Your words have been marked. What am I....your "accountability partner"? ;) I have checked out the Miracle Morning free ebook. I'll download it tomorrow. Thanks for the recommendation.

Awesome! I hope you benefit from it as much as I did! I'll gladly be your accountability partner if you choose to follow through with it :)

Thanks, I'll let you know after I read it.
