Effort Matters Twice

Dan Chambliss, a sociologist in his book, “The Mundanity Of Excellence,” a study on competitive swimmers observed that the most stunning human achievements are aggregate of countless individual elements, each of which in their own are Ordinary.

Greatness, he concluded was Doable, no matter what your starting level of talent.

Angela Duckworth, author of GRIT, came up with two equations that she used to try and explain how you get from talent to achievement.

  • Talent X Effort = Skill
  • Skill X Effort = Achievement

Talent, she says is how quickly your skills improve when you invest effort.

Achievement is what happens when you take your acquired skills and use them.

Duckworth concludes that many of us quit what we start far too often and far too early.

Even more important than the effort that gritty people put in on a single day is the fact that they get up the next day, the day after that, ready to get on the treadmill and keep going.

In order for you to become the best you can possibly be, effort matters twice.

GRIT is a critical success factor for entrepreneurs.

How Gritty Are You?

How will you apply the effort to build your talent here at WA?

How will you then apply the skills and effort to achieve what goals you set for yourself?

Think about it...

Reflect on it...

I've just got to build the skills part. Jim

Yes, knowing our gaps is a great way to focus our actions.

Good stuff. Like the Little Engine, we need to keep saying I think I can until he got over the hill...then we can say with him, I thought I could. Is that CORNY? :)

Ha! Ha! Yes, every bit of help to produce the effort helps...

Thank you for the good word.

More food for thought!! Many good ideas daily to continue to strive to be successful. Thank you.
Claudia

Yes, Claudia, reflect and then take action. Without action there is no effort.

I remember reading once. "If practice was easy, it wouldn't be practice" not sure who wrote it.
Then you have ‘Repetition is the mother of learning, the father of action, which makes it the architect of accomplishment.’ by Zig Ziglar.
Just gotta grind it out, day after day, after day.

Zig is also the master of effort.

Absolutely true. I will personally keep this in my mind. I have come here to do something. I have been trying hard to do it. I will not quit till the target is met. Your article has been a big pointer. Thanks that you shared.
My regards,
Kalyan.

We are all here to achieve our goals. Every bit of “push” to make us produce the effort helps.

I am thinking all day of it...

Think, reflect then take action.

Reflection is my lifething achievement and action is changing. It s no longer a vulcano. Its more a calm ocean now.

The equation works.
Joe

Thanks, Joe for helping validate it.

A terrific perspective. At the end of the day will you face the obstacle and do it anyway.

Baby steps.

"I will until......"

Lily 😊

Every baby step is effort towards your goals...

Your blog probably explain why, for example, a high school graduate is richer than a certain college graduate of business. The former is not exactly without talent but exerts more effort on his business thereby equal in skill to that of the college graduate who does not exert much effort as he relies greatly on the skills he learned on his training in top-notch school.

The question now is who between the two, who both have the same skills, achieves more? It is the hi-school grad, of course, because he exerts more effort on his skill. Unlike the college grad who does not exert much effort on the skill he has. Am I right?

Nice post you have. You keep us thinking.

It would be difficult to compare. More important is what are the success factors we need to focus on to get results.

Excellent post. I love the formula presented in this post. We for sure get new perspective here and motivatin. Thanks.
