Homeschool Lesson - Being Consistent

During my 24 years of homeschooling my children, I have learned a lot! I thought schooling them would be for them, but I now am starting to use some of the the life lessons in my online home business.

The biggest thing that has kept our homeschool going and a success (I have four graduates!) has been consistency! Just like getting up and eating breakfast, brushing your teeth, etc. I make sure our homeschool is a priority and we do it every day.

The hard part is when life throws you a curve ball. Sicknesses happen, unplanned company, death of a loved one, etc. There were times when these things would take priority and we would not do school. It was also a lesson for my kids to put priorities straight and that sometimes priorities change. But, the main thing was to not let these things take over for a long period of time. We have to return to doing school!

That is what has happened to me the last two weeks. My mom became ill and we had to take her to the emergency room because she could not breathe. She ended up with pneumonia on top of her COPD...two things that are not a good combination. She was so bad that the doctors asked us to make a decision whether to put her on a ventilator. She did not want that, so we did not go that route. She was hospitalized for 6 days and during this time my sister and I took turns being with her through the day and through the night. Thankfully, she improved and is now at home! I am still helping her with dinners, cleaning, etc. till she is up on her own 100%

That was a life curve ball in both our homeschool AND for me working on my website. I was not able to get anything done in either of those areas for a whole week. Knowing what I have learned through my homeschool years, I knew I needed to get right back to it as soon as I could and keep the consistency going.

So, I took this past Monday to get my kids caught up on their school work (priority #1) and the past two days I have been working hard on my site, getting out several content articles. It feels good to accomplish so much, to put priorities in their proper place and mainly to be consistent!

So, when life throws you a curve ball, do what you need to do, but make sure you get back to it and be consistent at what you do.

Have you ever had life through you a curve ball? I would love to hear what you do to make sure it doesn't throw you completely off track!

Consistency is the hardest part.
Needs discipline

🍀👍

Exactly! Discipline is hard but doable.

Yes,
And once acquired
Never forgotten

takes 10 days to build new habit
And stick to it

The main thing, after reaching the habit phase, is to make sure that when "life" happens and knocks us off our schedule to get right back to it. It is so easy to just keep putting it off!

Yes... can be very hard when life gets in the Way

I am so glad to hear your mother is doing better. And kudos for homeschooling your children.

Curve balls hit every once and awhile some huge (death) and some smaller (unkind words-I take things to heart). Every situation requires me to react differently usually i throw myself into work.

In the future i want to throw into my online business. I will also head out to the trails for a hike or a ride for smaller incidents. Nature soothes the soul.

I agree! Nature works wonders. I live in the woods and the kids and I love to take breaks from school and explore. Sometimes they learn so much more this way than in the books.

Karen

Exactly!!

That is a very nice post that demonstrates the importance of knowing your priorities and how one can catch up when issues step in. Very Good.

Thank you! I know many people who have quit homeschooling and business because life got hard. Instead of accepting it and moving on, they gave up. So sad!

Hope your mum is better soon.
Yes, life can get a bit frantic sometimes. I guess I use the time to reflect on what I am grateful for, review where I am and plan my next step when the dust settles.

Have a lovely day

Lily 😊

My mom is doing much better! She is just low on energy and sleeps a lot but that is her body healing.

Thanks for asking! Karen
