Ways to overcome writers block

In my paying job, I own and operate a small service company in our very rural area. Saturday I had a client in a little town called Hamburg, California. Look it up. Its in the middle of nowhere.

From where I live, there are only two ways to get there, one takes me nearly 90 minutes to get there, but the roads are easy and wide and safer. The shortest way to get there is a slow drive unless you have a death wish.

You see, even though traveling by the shortest road its only thirty five miles away, twenty two of those miles are on a winding and precarious road down a river canyon. The road is often one lane wide, at least a dozen blind corners, and for ten or so miles there are dropoffs hundreds of feet down to the river.

Did I mention there are no guardrails either?

Saturday the drive was uneventful. I was passed in the opposite direction by a single pickup truck and two logging trucks hauling full loads. Thankfully I met all of them on straighter portions with enough room to pass each other slowly.

Going home was even easier. The drive usually takes me about an hour or so each way.

Why would I go down that road with all of its troubles and dangers when I could have taken a longer route by highways and the Interstate 5 Freeway? I went that way to save time, and because if I take my time its faster.

I posted a new article on my website where I am promoting Wealthy Affiliate and blogging about the journey as I go. Todays article was all about how to make the writing process easier. I've got several pieces I'm going to write, a series if you will.

If you've ever had writers block, perhaps the outline I shared will help you. You see, its the same format I use to prepare a three point sermon or bible study. I'll share it in brief here, and if you use the links in my profile on the side of this blog page, you can probably figure out which site to go to. Hint: Its not a website about coffee.

Here's my outline, use it if you like.

The Outline to Make Writing Content Easier

Proposition:

A proposition is the part of the message where you tell your audience what it is you are going to tell them. Keep it simple, what’s the big “so what” of your article. (In this article, my big so what is “ways to overcome writers block”)

Goal:

A Goal is where do you want to take your audience to? What do you want them to know or to do? Maybe you’ve heard the proverb? That proverb says “If you don’t know what you are aiming at, you’ll probably hit something else”. You should know the goal of your article before you start it.

Key Phrase:

This is your main search term, the one you want to be found for on Google, Bing, and Yahoo. This is the same as my “big so what” in this piece, but could be different in other articles and messages.

Introduction:

An introduction is some sort of illustration or story to get the idea across. Without realizing it, most people are receptive to parables and allegories before being fact based learners. Turn on your Television and every single advertisement is telling you a story. The advertiser wants to get you emotionally involved or to help you understand complex ideas in sixty seconds or fewer. Stories draw us in and help us learn, and through them we become more receptive to the messaging advertisers or preachers want us to hear.

Three Main Points and their Sub Points (if there are any):

I. Point one – use another keyword that you want to rank for

  1. sub point one
  2. sub point two

II. Point Two – another keyword that is valuable to your message

III. Point three- a third keyword that you want traffic from would be good here.

Conclusion: Your conclusion is the summary. Now then, this is where you tell your audience what you just told them. You should repeat telling them the action or actions that you want them to take. Do you want them to make a purchase? Should they leave a comment? How about having them click on something?

That’s it, now you possess the entire outline to help you write better, communicate more clearly, and keep your audience longer.

Thank you. Sometimes the shortest and quickest path to the finish line is the most difficult and still takes a lot of time and effort.

In school I had a hard time writing papers and reports. It's taken a long time to figure out which tools and methods have helped me the most. I plan to write a few more articles for my website with some of the "tricks" I employ to make writing easier for me. Thanks

Great info, James. Totally bookmark worthy! Thanks.

Thank you. Reading the help needed posts and chat on WA has made me aware that many of us who are pursuing online businesses have the same challenges that keep us from writing. I'm hoping to address some of the things that have helped me, and share those here and on my website.

Looking forward to it, James. I'll be watching. Blessings in all you do!

That’s basically the outline we were taught in school which I have used in writing and preparing talks for many years. This is a very helpful post.

I mention in my website article that I was taught this format as a very young intern in the 1980s by a pastor. I still use it in both secular and ministry life all the time.
