Hybrid vs. Organic Facebook Strategies: My 28-Day Experiment Results

Over the past 28 days, I conducted a simple but powerful experiment: I launched two Facebook pages at the same time—both starting as hybrid growth models (using paid ads + organic content). After a short test phase, I transitioned one page to fully organic growth while keeping the other as a hybrid. The results were eye-opening.

Why Run This Experiment?

I wanted clear data. While I assumed paid ads could boost early visibility, I also believed organic strategies would lead to stronger, more sustainable engagement over time. This experiment helped confirm—or challenge—those beliefs.

The Pages at a Glance

  • Affiliate Hybrid Page: Continued running paid ads while posting organically.
  • Passion Organic Page: Started with ads but quickly transitioned to 100% organic growth.

28-Day Results

Affiliate Hybrid Page

  • Total Views: 29,033 (+3%)
  • Reach: 18.4K (+5.5%)
  • 3-Second Video Views: +766.7%
  • Content Interactions: +140.8%
  • Watch Time: +913.3%
  • Organic vs Paid Views: 80% from ads (down 15.8%), organic views up 300%

  • Post Impressions: +38.1%
  • Facebook Stories: 51 published (151 impressions)
  • Instagram Posts: 39 published (48 impressions)
  • Conversions: 1 sign-up, no sales
  • Ad Spend: CA$323.48
Ad Breakdown:

  • Website Visitors (Mar 23): CA$30.65 | 99 clicks | 2,110 reach
  • Boosted Post (Mar 26): CA$3.76 | 5 clicks | 683 reach
  • Post Engagement (Mar 20): CA$4.57 | 24 engagements | 127 reach
  • Page Likes (Mar 19): CA$109.14 | 191 likes | 1,947 reach
  • Website Visitors (Mar 15): CA$175.45 | 488 clicks | 11,051 reach
  • So you can see I tired a few to see what outcome would be from each.

Passion Organic Page

  • Total Views: 75,845 (+24.6%)
  • Reach: 52.1K (+58.1%)
  • 3-Second Video Views: -69.9%
  • Content Interactions: +28.2%
  • Watch Time: 35 minutes—indicating meaningful engagement
  • 100% Organic Views: +316.7%

  • Facebook Impressions: Jumped from 3.8K to 10.5K (+175.8%)
  • Instagram Impressions: +22.2% (organically)
  • Instagram Stories: 7 published (97 impressions)
  • Conversions: 3 actual sales
  • Ad Spend: $0

Side-by-Side Comparison

The numbers speak volumes. The fully organic page more than doubled the performance of the hybrid page in views, reach, and engagement. Despite consistent posting strategies on both pages, the organic strategy delivered better outcomes—without a single dollar spent on ads.

Meanwhile, the hybrid page consumed over CA$320 in ads, resulting in just two sign-ups and no sales. That’s not a great return.

Mindset & Budgeting: Spend Smart

I had a CA$500 ad budget in place, so I was comfortable spending the CA$323.48. But here’s the thing: you should never spend money you’re not okay losing. Every dollar in this business gets tracked in my “black book,” because I treat this like the business it is. Strategy matters. Planning matters more.

One sign-up from an ad could eventually pay off—but that’s a long game. And from where I’m standing now, I have a feeling my organic page is going to pay for both.

Cost Efficiency of Paid Ads

While paid ads boosted visibility, they lacked depth and long-term traction. The engagement faded when the ad spend stopped.

  • Conversions: 1 sign-up, 0 sales

The Winning Strategy: Organic Growth

Organic growth isn’t just viable—it’s powerful. In less than a month, my fully organic page outperformed the hybrid one across nearly every metric. More views, stronger reach, better engagement, and—most importantly—real conversions.

Organic SEO and authentic content clearly build better communities and deeper trust.

Strategic Takeaways

  • Start Hybrid, Shift Organic: Use paid ads early for visibility, then pivot to consistent, high-quality content.
  • Quality > Quantity: Authentic content will always beat shallow ad engagement.
  • Stay Consistent: Show up daily. Your audience notices.
  • Track and Adjust: Follow the data. It’ll tell you what’s working.

Final Thoughts

Both of these pages are now committed to a long-term 1-year strategy, and March marks the final month of Phase 1 in this journey. There are three key phases mapped out for the year, each designed to build on the momentum of the last, refine the process, and drive sustainable results.

Over the past three months, the results have been eye-opening.

  • The Affiliate Page pulled in 57,576 views,
  • Meanwhile, the Passion Page exploded with over 200,000 views

These numbers proved something I’ve long suspected: organic growth isn’t just possible—it might be the better path. When you build trust, engage your audience consistently, and stay patient, you don’t need to overspend to grow.

Starting April 1, I’ll be launching a new strategy for the Affiliate Page, with a focus on shifting toward organic growth while testing how well I can convert that traffic into sign-ups and real sales. This next phase will help determine if I can reduce ad spend while increasing long-term impact.

Have you tested similar strategies? Whether you're new to the game or deep in the grind, I’d love to hear about your wins, lessons, or what you're experimenting with.

Let’s grow together.

Interesting - thank you for sharing.

You're very welcome, Mia!

Glad you found it interesting—I'm always happy to share what I'm learning along the way. More insights coming soon!

That's great Shawn. I've only just started my own FB strategy in the last 2-3 weeks. So I'm learning as much as I can!
So far, my strategy has been to join as many groups as I can that I think might like my content, and then I share a post in the group. I wait and test how it goes. If it seems to go OK, then I post more in the group, and also join more groups that are 'suggested groups' from that group.
So far it's going OK. Lots of trial and error!
Best wishes with your facebook strategy and I look forward to your next insights!
Cheers
Melissa

Hey Melissa!

Thanks so much—that means a lot! And I love what you’re doing with your Facebook strategy. Jumping into groups and testing what works is such a smart move—seriously, you’re already way ahead just by being hands-on and experimenting.

One thing that really helped me too was not just posting in groups, but also commenting on other people’s posts. It’s a great way to get noticed without feeling “salesy,” and it builds real connections over time. I’ve had some awesome convos just by jumping into the comments!

You're doing awesome—keep going, and don’t be afraid to try new stuff. I’m excited to see how your strategy evolves.

Cheers,
Shawn

Organic is always the best in my opinion Shawn..... as long as we can get it my friend!!! :-)

Absolutely, Jessie!

I’m with you 100%—organic is where the magic really happens. It takes time, but the connection and trust I'm build along the way is worth every second. Here’s to growing it the real way, my friend!

Absolutely buddy and all the very best with it!! :-)

Thanks for sharing alm of this Shawn.

Gary Vee (Vaynerchuck) has been on a roll about “organic” free content.

Do you have an idea of sales generated from all those views?

Hey Brad!

Thanks for checking it out! Yeah, Gary Vee’s been on fire lately with that “organic first” mindset—it really aligns with what I’ve been testing on my end.

As for sales, they’ve started to trickle in. So far this March, I’ve had 3 confirmed sales directly from the organic page. It’s not huge yet, but I’m seeing consistent traction month over month since I started running this strategy—especially on days when engagement spikes around blog drops.

Phase one was all about building a solid brand base and testing what works. I’ll be diving into a full breakdown of results and patterns as part of phase two. It’s definitely a long game, but I’m all in.

Appreciate you following along, man!

Interesting outcome, Shawn!

Thanks for the info :)

Teri

You're very welcome, Teri!

I found it pretty fascinating too—wasn't quite what I expected, but that's the fun of testing things out. Always happy to share the journey!
