Fear of Failure? or Fear of Success?

What is Holding You Back? Fear of Failure or Success?

What do you think the answer is? Most people would say they have a fear of failure - right? The truth is (and it's my truth for sure) is that people have a fear of success. Interesting - right? Everyone says that want to be successful - but do they? Do they do the activities that lead to success? Possibly but for how long?

People are more connected to failure than success. We have "failed" throughtout our lives - the list is endless.

Failed in school on a test

Failed in a job - got fired

Failed in a relationship

Failed in another business

From the beginning of our lives we have experienced failure and generally it does not stop of from moving forward - getting a new job, a new relationship, another business - correct? Failure is comfortable!

My story contains a lot of failures and successes. I have been self-employed for over 30 years. I became very adept at sabotaging my successes. The list is endless - as soon as I was feeling successful - I made an excuse (subconsciously) decided to bail out.

The key was to identify the problem - why was I runing away from success just when I experienced success. It took a long time to connect the dots.

For me the fear of success was a fear of "what will people say, what will people expect, what will people believe."

Son how does that fear manifiest? Through procrastination, self-sabotage (my favorite), an inability to concentrate or feel discomfort with the signs of succes

Can you relate? What do you believe is your "go-to" process to "not be successful".

The keys are to take notice when you're "almost there" and then you're not. Notice the signs of self-sabotage in your life. What stories do you tell yourself and others.

For me I always had a story - the economy is bad, my leaders are not paying attention to me, there's a new opportunity, what if people want what I don't have, I'm not a good business owner, my employees don't like me - and the list goes on and on.

I had to ask myself certain questions when I finally realized what I was doing!

  • Is this belief true?
  • Could I be wrong?
  • Is there real evidence to support this belief?
  • What prices have I paiid?

Again, we know how to fail because we've been doing it our entire life - success is more complex.

As i start my journey with WA I am more aware of my challenges and have chosen to create my success.

I remind myself I will have an excess of resoures if I'm successful. And the resources will result in fulfilling my dreams. I am chosing to enjoy the process of success and not live in the fear of succcess.

Hi Sonja,

Wow! Every time I read another paragraph I thought you were describing my life. In my long and checkered past I've started a lot businesses and career paths. It seems like every time I almost got successful I give it up and looked for something else.I guess I had a fear of success.

I can understand where you are coming from and agree with every thing you've said. Maybe if I had read your post way back when, I would have more money than stories.

Thanks for the insightful discourse. It made a lot of sense.

I wish you much success here on Wealthy Affiliate,
Don

Great post Sonja and I'm with you, it's the fear of success that gets me. Too much training as a girl, that we serve not lead.
I've been chipping away at this all my life and I'm getting there.

I know if I just keep following this plan and writing quality content I will get there sooner rather than later.
Other priorities always seem to take precedence. I'm learning to take back my time.

Lily 😊🎶

Failure is not fatal...only if you quit... your past doesn’t determine your future.... you do... it all in how you respond... success comes when you give yourself permission to succeed..
you’ve got this ...

Great post, Sonja! I either procrastinate, or prioritize differently. Also, there could be a little of the fear of failure, although I've failed plenty in my life. the fear of success is probably more real--can I handle it all flooding in at once. Remember the old saying, "Careful what you wish for, you just might get it!"

Thanks Jeffrey - you're right "be careful what you ask for". Be ready fo the "getting it" and be mindful of your "fear of success" beliefs and behaviors.
