Changing Domains and how they affect traffic
Hi guys. So this is more of a question than an explanation. Basically, I wanted to change the extension of my webstie to .com instead of the .me. However, the only available domains I can find aren't identical to my domain now.
I know I have to change my domain if I want to have a .com extension but I don't know how that will affect any traffic I'm getting now. Is it worth having the more popular domain? If anyone has experience with this I would love some opinions.
Thank guys and best wishes!

I think when it comes to switching domains, the name isn't as important as the extension (.com is obviously better) but if you have content on the old site, it will need to be moved to the new one, BUT that process I am unfamiliar with. I do recall it involves moving and copying over the content and telling Google to omit the old domain's content so you don't get slapped with Duplicate content penalties. Talk to Kyle or Carson about this, they will know for sure.
Okay thanks bud. And just out of curiosity, why wouldn't it be as simple as when I changed my website over from a siterubix domain to the domain I have now?
Is it possible to just use Site manager to just move my website to a new domain and then delete the other site?
Not sure about moving your own domains to another name, but with siterubix, it cancels out the other site, I believe and that way you wouldn't have to manually check the links. I'm not 100% on this so please be sure to consult with Kyle or Carson on this topic, they'll know for sure.
Hey SalMB, have you done it? I need to transfer my current site to a new domain. How can we do it under WA? :)
good question. I feel quality content is extremely important. But it is more easy for people to go to a dot com, or org or net. I guess it also can give a little more rec ignition to your site.
I like .com It is what you feel comfortable with and like. From my understanding people in general seem to respond better with .com or .org more than the other. Google likes these as well...
I still believe that quality of content is still the most important factor to get better search engine ranking.
Wow, your website looks great so far. Haven't had the time to read through much of it though. I am a musician as well, weeeell I am a drummer, so some say I am not as much musician as other instrumentalists ;oD Just kidding...
About your domain ending, there are many threads on WA already, that .com, .net and .org are the most popular endings and if you want to have high rankings on the most popular search engines, you should always try to go with one of these. Since you already have a pretty website up and running, that might be a bit of a decision here. I am no expert in these things, so let's wait other experts to chime in here.
All the best to you meanwhile!
Cheers, Kay
I'm not sure if WA allows it, as some hosting places do not. But you can always have more than one domain name all directing to the same site. If you want to buy the .com and make it your primary domain, then use the .me domain to also point to the same site you can do this.
The info you need to gather is if WA allows this

After that, figure out how your domain company handles it. Most are all the same, it's under Domain Management somewhere where you to link multi domain names to all direct to one site.

I don't think it will affect you at all. When users search, they do so with the words between www and .com or whatever. Using a search engine, the vast majority of people will reach their destination by clicking on a link, not actually typing the URL into the browser. So what ever you put between the http:// and the .com, .me, .org, etc is what will bring them in. IMO.
