New Beginnings!

After 21 years of running a stump grinding business, I’ve just sold it—and it feels like the beginning of a new chapter. You could say that I am turning over a new leaf and branching out!😄

I originally started out in agriculture and landscaping, and stump grinding came along as a sideline to support that work. I quickly realised it was a fairly lucrative niche and decided to focus on it. I’ve had two periods of running the business. The first time, I sold the business and had a break for a few years. The second time around, I had a major advantage; I understood how to harness the power of the internet. So, I was able to quickly grow the business much quicker than the first time around.

What took years the first time around only took about six months with the right online presence. A simple local service website combined with some digital marketing brought in regular leads. Without the internet, growing the business would have taken so much longer.

So Why Did I Decide To Sell?

There were a few reasons. Physically demanding work takes its toll, and after a lifetime of manual labour, I knew it was time for a change. More importantly, I want to put more focus into my online businesses. The flexibility it offers is invaluable—especially with plans to spend more time in Greece, where I hope to be involved in evangelistic and missionary work.

I’ve always believed that if you wake up in the morning and don’t look forward to going to work, something’s not right. We should be excited to start the day—not dragging ourselves into it. That’s why I’m a huge believer in the potential of building an online business. The opportunities really are out there if you’re willing to put the work in.

In fact, I often tell young people that if they want to get ahead, they’d be better off investing in an online course than going to university. Sadly, many just want the university lifestyle—not the qualifications.

I’ll still be working part-time online, but the sale of my physical business gives me the time and space to do more of what I enjoy—and explore new territory. Sometimes, it’s good to completely start again.

To those here at Wealthy Affiliate—thank you. This community has produced some amazing success stories, and I’ve always appreciated the way people help one another. If you’re new here, take the time to go through the training. Everything you need is in front of you—you just have to stick with it. Remember that everything takes time to grow and develop, whether it’s an online business or off-line business

And finally, a word of encouragement; be yourself in everything you do. Whether you're writing blog posts or speaking on YouTube, don’t try to be someone you’re not. We’re all created uniquely—and that’s our greatest asset.

Thank you for reading.

Great informative detail on your post, Roy. Yes, we all have to start somewhere with your business and of course of lot of the younger ones prefer the university lifestyle as it will provide them with substantial housing for the next two years while preparing for the real world.

Myra ♥️

Thank you, Myra! I appreciate you taking the time to comment on my blog post.

I always think that old-fashioned apprenticeships are often better for people, when they receive hands-on training, rather than just going to university for the sake of it. Also, they are learning when they are earning, rather than getting in debt, before they have started earning.

I always try and encourage young people to do an online course, but it seems like they all want to have the University experience, or maybe I should say the partying experience! Or maybe it's me getting old!

Enjoy the rest of your day.

Roy

2

Hi Roy, while I do hear what you're saying on that one. It's just that there's no way to convince the younger generation that getting the hands on learning would be far more advancing.

Myra ♥️

2

So no more stump grinding Roy, leave it for someone younger! I know the feeling myself; I can't do what I could 21 years ago!
Youth is wasted on the young, so it's said. As you say, many just want the university lifestyle—not the qualifications. I believe many are unwilling to assume responsibility unless they have to, which was the case for me.
Good luck with your new chapter,

Rick

3

Exactly, Rick! That sounds like a good idea to me!

40+ years ago, someone had to be quite unique to go to university, but now it seems that anyone can go, without any direction, whatsoever! I believe that if someone for example spent three years solid working hard and following the training at Wealthy Affiliate, they would be far better off than having a university degree.

Thank you for the good wishes and thank you very much for commenting.

Good morning Nick,

It's fascinating what people do, Nick, you could say that I have been getting to the root of the problem for some years now. It is now time to turn over a new leaf and branch out into other things. Yes, I'm looking forward to spending more time in Greece and not having to do the daily grind every day!

Although, I won't be carrying out stump grinding, I'm one of those people who can't stand not doing anything, so looking forward to being able to spend more time with my online business and other things as well.

I do appreciate you taking the time to comment. I hope everything is okay at your end, Nick, and that it's not too hot in France.

Have a great day.

It is indeed fascinating Roy... I did many different things back in the day before I left England!!

I know you are one of those who will never be able to stand still and will always have to do something productive.... (wish I could say the same about myself, but... let's see what happens when the time comes for me) !!!

Unfortunately Roy.... it's way too hot for me in France...

We got back from a vacation in Spain a couple of weeks back where the weather was great!! Maximum 25-26 °c each day.... perfect!!

Then in Lyon it has been 35 plus nearly every day since.... not perfect!!!

Enjoy the rest of your week my friend! :-)

3

That's interesting, Nick, do you think you would still be doing many different things if you stayed in England? One of the reasons that I ask that question is that if I move to Greece, they could be limitations to what I can do, although I plan to work online. But I do think the benefits will outweigh the not so good things, like bureaucracy, etc.

That's very true, I like doing things and not particularly going with the flow, if that makes sense, but just trying to be myself! I can't stand not doing anything, which I think is kinda good!

I understand where you're coming from, Nick. I think if I was living in Greece, I would think about having my summer holidays, perhaps back in the UK. But let's wait and see. I do think it's important to have a room or space where you can work comfortably.

I just looked Lyon, upon the map, as it was quite sure whereabouts you are. For some reason, I thought you were coastal, but you're not, so that must make it harder in the heat.

I appreciate you taking the time to comment, Nick. I do hope that the weather cools down for you.

Enjoy your day.

That's the ultimate sliding door question isn't it Roy???

Small decisions in the past can actually have a huge bearing on what we do in life!

I was down to my last 20 euros in Gibraltar and considered phoning home to ask my old man to pay for a flight back for me...

I decided to have a quick drink in the bar next to where we had the van parked instead... got talking with a guy and he offered me a job starting the next day!!!

The rest is history and I have done well ever since!!

If I had never spent my last cash on an alcoholic beverage... who knows where I would be now!

The smallest decisions can impact the rest of our lives!

Lyon is about 400km to the coast.... I miss living by the sea... there's nothing better than a midnight dip when it's too bloody hot... like now!!

It doesn't look like the weather will get any cooler here over the next week Roy....

I even got an email from my insurance company yesterday warning us to stay cool with the heatwave!!!

It's the same every year!!

Take care buddy and enjoy the rest of your weekend ok! :-)

3

Good morning Nick,

Yes, I guess that's very true! And also, it's always good to look forward rather than what could have happened!

It's not often people come out a winner when they drink alcohol, Nick! But it sounds like you were definitely in the right place at the right time. It's nice to hear a story like that. Exactly, what would have happened if you hadn't had that alcoholic beverage!?

I was a very fine line between getting it right and wrong, or if I word it another way, thriving and not thriving!

I must admit, I was quite surprised that Lyon is that far from the sea, 400 km is a long way to the coast. Yes, it's wonderful just to be able to go in the water when it's hot like that.

I do hope the weather cools down soon. Our weatherman and media are very excited about the hot weather! I made a comment in the Daily Telegraph yesterday, as they were very excited about the warm weather. I mentioned about how the temperatures look normal in Thessaloniki, Greece, for the time of year, for the next two weeks. However, for the first five months of this year, I had never seen the Thessaloniki whether so poor, but they won't talk about that, they only want to talk about the mainstream narrative!

Take care and have a good week.

Probably the most important beer I have ever had in my life Roy!!!

Drinking isn't so bad sometimes.... (well, that's what I like to tell myself)!!

Still sweltering here but by the weekend things look slightly better... maximum of about 32....

Take care buddy! :-)

3

Good morning Nick,

That really is a great story, Nick! Maybe you need to write a blog post, "the beer that changed my life", or "I thank that beer for my job"! It's all good fun!

I know what you're saying about the beer, Nick. I listen to a pastor across the pond sometimes, he has some great things to say. One of the things he said was, "how many people have you heard say that my business really grew, when I started drinking"! He has a point, but there's definitely exceptions, as in your case, Nick. I must admit, a beer on a hot day can be very refreshing and sometimes even on a cold day!

I'm glad it looks like it's cooling down a bit, Nick. It's been warm here in the UK, even sitting in front of my computer, it's not possible to work efficiently. I've always said that if I lived in Greece, I would have a small room that I could air condition and work in or escape to in hot weather.

Thank you for commenting, I do appreciate it.

Have a great day.

Roy

2

No one beer has changed my life more than that one Roy... or not one I can remember....

I don't believe I need to tell my stories to anyone though... if I want to.. then I will..... for now I'm just happy to go with the flow my friend and enjoy the cooler weather here!!

Enjoy a wonderful start to the weekend my friend and take care ok!!!

👍👍

3

Good morning Nick,

I can believe that, Nick, how amazing, good for you!

That's fair enough! That's good that the weather has cooled down a bit.

I hope you have a great weekend.

All the best.

Roy👍

2

Evening Roy! The weather is soooooo much better now and will get even better until at least Wednesday....

Could get seriously hot again then... let's see!!!

Have a wonderful weekend my friend! :-)

👍👍

3

Good evening Nick,

I'm really pleased that the weather has cooled down for you! It's okay if you're on holiday, but if you're trying to work in it and do normal life, it's not quite so clever. At least you have a bit of a respite from the hot weather.

It is looking like the next two weeks could be warm here again in the UK, or at least in East Anglia, where I come from. I'm heading to Greece next Saturday for a few weeks, which will be good, I'm looking forward to it!

Thank you. And you have a great weekend too.

Hey Roy,

Great Post. Over the years I have worked some demanding jobs but most of my life has been as a software developer and business owner.

When Hurricane Helena decided to run up our coast and push so much water inland that I felt like I was in a ship and not a home. I still felt lucky becuase our living space was upstairs and didn't get any water. But our downstairs got 3.5 ', but several house on our street are single story. So yeah I feel blessed.

Now you have to realize I'm in my late sixties and I hadn't done real physical labor for quite some time. Yeah I mow the lawn and pull weeds and such. But what I decided to do was to fix everything myself. Drywall, Floors, Paint, Plumbing, Trim. Over the years I have learned these skills so why not.

This is when I realized just how out of shape I was. But after several days of ultra sore muscles and backaches I pushed through. Now it's been some time since the storm and I'm just now drawing close to finishing up.

Plus I lost so many tools (drills, saws, you name it) and had to replace them to do the work. But all this to say. I do understand what it feels like to do physical labor. And the older you get the harder it gets.

So I'm semi-retired and still do software work. But these days I use AI to do most of the work and I just love it.

Always keep your eyes on the lord and you will do well. I wish you all the best in your endeavors and enjoy the non-physical world. It's much easier.

- Glen Barnhardt

2

Good morning Glen,

Thank you for taking the time to respond to my blog post, with such a nice comment, it's appreciated. It always fascinates me with what people do for a living, Glen, I don't mean that in an interfering way, I just find it genuinely really interesting.

We are really quite fortunate in the UK, we do get some rough weather, but we don't get the hurricane type weather and tornadoes, like the US seems to have at times. Yes, it's always important to be grateful for what we have, you are fortunate that you could escape some of the flooding, etc.

Although my work has become much easier over the years, for example, the stump grinder was radio remote, but there was still physical work attached to the job. I do find it's amazing how quickly we can lose our fitness, which is something I don't want to do. I have never attended a gym, but I'm wondering if I might need to, as I think it's important to keep sensibly fit. But of course, that's easier said than done. It's great that you have been doing some physical work and pushed through, etc, it looks like you have something to show for your efforts.

It's disappointing when we lose tools and things that we have had for many years, because often these things are something that we have built up over a lifetime. Working part-time online has enabled me to see that there are easier ways to make money, which is less stressful on the body!

I always think it's wonderful when someone can say that they love their work, Glen. It's good that you are using AI to help. I also think many people have a lifetimes worth of knowledge and it is good to be able to use that and share that knowledge to help others.

I agree with you, it's good to keep our eyes on the right things, my faith is very close to me and I have been privileged to see and be part of some wonderful things over the years. I'm thankful that I have been in some really strong churches and had strong people around me It's interesting that many people think that Greece is Christian, but it's orthodox Christianity, which is more religious. The Greeks are a lovely race of people, but it's good for them to know the truth.

I wish you all the best, Glen.

Roy

PS: Maybe you need to start writing more again on the Wealthy Affiliate platform?

Thanks Roy,

I will be writting more. It was amost 7 years ago when I first signed up for WA. But AI was not around and the time it took to even curate one good article was at least a 2 -4 hour deal with research, writting, finding images. etc... Being a business owner and the sole employee of that business I was working super long hours so I had to step away. Now I wish I had presevered because I would be so much further ahead. But you can't change the past you can only change right now. So right now I'm back.. and I have the time so I'm going to work hard and retire my hard working wife.

Have a great day,
Glen

Hello Glen,

That's great to hear, as I feel that many people on the Wealthy Affiliate platform, have so much to bring to the table, including your good self. It's amazing how quickly time goes, I knew you had been on the platform for quite some time.

I hear where you're coming from, AI has definitely helped massively with research and creating articles. When I create an article from scratch, it feels like it doesn't take very long, but time goes by so quickly when we are in front of the screen, it always takes a bit longer than we think. But definitely AI has helped speed things up, tremendously now.

Time is a wonderful thing and we can't do everything. I'm sure if you are running your business, you must have been very busy. It's great that you now have the time to move forward with Wealthy Affiliate. I guess if you have been running your own business, you actually quite like doing things, I certainly do. This is where an online business can be so much fun and such a good asset.

Wishing you a great day.

Roy

1

Thanks Roy,

I do like working. Which is rare. So I don't know that I will ever fully retire. I love what I do.

- Glen

2

It's a pleasure, Glen!

I'm exactly the same, I can't stand not doing anything with my time, hence why I don't have a television. I just like to be doing things, as I find satisfaction in that. So I do understand fully where you are coming from, Glen.

All the best.

Roy

1

Congratulations on your successful business.

2

Thank you, Acken, I appreciate you commenting.

My journey with WA is progressing well, am learning a lot of things that I have never heard before. Thanks.

2

That's great to hear, Acken! The great thing is with the Wealthy Affiliate platform is that we can actually learn quite quickly, as everything is set out in a good way, to make a learning really easy and straightforward.

Keep going forward and all the best.

Roy
