What Was Your First Computer?

My first computer was a Kaypro 2. It weighed more than my sewing machine, which was itself a tank. This was long before Windows, even before DOS--it ran on the CP/M operating system. My Kaypro came with a lot of software. I learned to use the spreadsheet and to do our finances in it. I used the word processor mainly, to write my first book, Living with Llamas: Adventures, Photos, and a Practical Guide. Sometimes Lil Bit got to come in the house as I worked.

When I moved on to other computers, the Kaypro 2 remained a bright spot in my memory. As I wait for my next computer, which should arrive inside of a week, I've been remembering the thrills of other computers.

Wow, what a question. . My families ever first computer was the Amstrad . Unfortunately, i dont remember much about them, except they were ahead of their time. Our second computer was the Atari gaming console, which really was a computer. When i gain more experience with Wealthy Affiliate, i plan to buy a notebook. Thanks for the question.

I learned to use DOS at work I the early 90s, desktop version, don't recall the make.

I had access to a home computer in early 2001 - A Compac desktop with Windows 98.
My first laptop was an HP model, 2009, Windows 7. I still have that one...lol.

I have two laptops, now. Both Acer models each with an external hard drive.

Ah yes, the 5" floppy drive, that became the 3" hardcase floppy, which later became the thumb/flash/USB drive...

I don't remember the brand but it was a 512k floppy disc that i bought in Berkeley California in 1986. I turned it on and it began whirring and spinning. I had no idea what I was doing so I shut it down almost immediately.
Wow, how things have changed. Going from DOS to Windows was a huge move.
A flash down memory lane.
Thanks for the topic!!!!

Well Rosana
the first computer I worked with involved 3 shifts over 24 hours of about 36 people per shift plus about 30 programmers and a hierarchy of managers. All the input went in on punched cards or via large wide tape units and outputs went to enormous banks of disk drives or paper (no screens!).
The IBM System 370, at IBM UK's HQ and peripherals were in a room about 180 x 90 feet, Workers controlling the punched cards were in a separate area of about 30 x 60 feet and programmers with a desk each close by.

Naturally I worked with IBM PCsand PS/2 when they were available in the mid to late 80s.

The first I owned myself though was not until about 1995 when I acquired an early sony VAIO laptop with a 17-inch screen. Needed a wheelbarrow to move it about (a slight exaggeration of course) but it kept me fit!

I've just remembered I had an Atari sometime in the 80s because it had the best music recording programmes of the day. It was so difficult to use that I didn't.

My husband's first computer was an Atari for the music too. He used it some.

One of the first Apples, running on DOS. And a daisy wheel printer. The office I worked in was a Math Department, and those math nerds asked which one of us in the office wanted to learn to use a computer, and I was the only one to jump at the chance. Ah, sweet memories. Thanks for the walk down memory lane, Rosana.
