Covid19 Phone Scam Going Around The UK - But Beware, It Could Happen Anywhere.

Hi WArriors & WArriettes

I'm not sure if this is genuine or not, but I always assume these things are true until I find out for certain that they're not.

I saw this on a Facebook friend's timeline just now, and while it's happening in the UK it's the sort of thing that could be replicated anywhere.

Please see the attached screenshot.

If you live in the UK, you will know that our National Health Service is publicly funded.

While we still have to pay for our prescriptions, they will NEVER phone you up and ask you for payment upfront for something you haven't actually asked for.

And if testing kids and / or vaccines become mandatory, then in the UK at least, it will be covered by the Great British Taxpayer.

Have a great WA day, folks!

Cheers

Rich :-)

Yeah that kind of stuff happens all the time in USA. They say their from IRS or SSA and try steal your info or tell you that you have back taxes owed and your going to go to jail if you don’t pay right then. The romance scammers are bad here. I get at least one friend request from a romance scammer on Facebook every day. You can always tell cause they’ll be widowed, friends private, no post, and only a couple pics. What’s funny is a couple them have left their usually Nigerian photos on the profile lol. And their bad on dating sites too. But I’ve had them send me text trying get your info so be aware of that too. Don’t go to any website from a text you don’t know. I know for fact cause I had romance scammer try scam me from a dating site and I left his phone number in my phone and I got text from him trying get me sign up for a phone plan. It was from scammers phone number. Have a great day.

Hi, Rich, there's also some dodgy emails going around in the UK regarding renewal of the TV License. Attached is a copy of one of three I have received in my inbox.

Each one claims they can't renew the license because something's gone gone wrong with the payment and to set up a new direct debit. Funny that, being over 75 I get my TV license for free in the UK

Thanks for the info, Harry.
Defo handy to know.

It's really infuriating that there are so many who choose not to make money legitimately. I have a blocker on my landline, so if one comes in the phone rings once and is disconnected. Most phone companies are doing this as well. If you primarily use your cell phone, then here's a link from the FTC: https://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/how-block-unwanted-calls

Thanks, Elaine. This one was via e-mail but there's plenty of phone scams going round too :-)

I may have misunderstood. I read the first line in the box that says phone and made an assumption. Sorry about that.

A note from the US. Recently, Wifey had to be tested, she was negative, and there were no costs incurred. These types of scams are becoming more prevalent no matter your location. It's always good to hear of these scam calls, and to learn the various techniques the scammers are using. Thanks for posting.

I agree, Greg. This one is specific to the UK but it can easily be replicated anywhere.

Maybe I just don't know enough about this tracking yet, but as I see it, I will ring up and say I have Covid symptoms, they will ask who I have been in contact with for over a certain number of minutes and will then contact them, to tell them to self isolate. But surely, as a friend, responsible adult and citizen, I will contact these people myself to tell them and don't need the government to spend money doing it for me!! Maybe I just don't understand it yet. But, sorry I'm on a rant, surely if I care for my friends and fellow citizens, I'll be taking the recommended precautions and won't be close enough to them, to give them the virus in the first place. Social distancing rules here are, after all, very strict. Apply the rules and stay safe everyone!

In the UK they're bringing out a test and trace app for this specific purpose, Geoffrey, but that's not really why I wrote the post.
The purpose was to make people aware of a scam going round, not to tell people what they ought to do if they find they have Covid symptoms.
Some people wait to be told and if it seems like it's the Health Authority contacting you, even if it's not, then some people will fall for it.
Cheers

Hi Rich, I fully understood where you were coming from and indeed it is very scary.
