Website Report - Month 5 (A Cautionary Tale)
Ok, here I am, back again with a new report on the progress of my new(ish) website.
Slightly different approach this time because although you will see the results are very encouraging, I made a huge mistake early into the month.
I wanted to highlight that here in the hope we can all learn from my experience.
Results
Ok, straight to it then:
Impressions = 18,029 (up from 5,887 = 206% rise) - Really happy with this but see below for the real story.
Clicks = 2 (up from 1) - Hey, that's a 100% increase. I know, I know but I'm taking it!!!
Average Ranking = 78.0 - Also see below because this was the statistic that caused my problem.
Sales = 0 (Up from 0!!!) - Yep!!!
Cautionary Tale (Please take note)
Ok, so on the face of it, everything was going in the right direction. My only concern was my low ranking and also the lack of click through to my pages. I guess, caused by the low ranking.
Anyway, the brain of Britain here thought, I know what I will do, I will optimise my meta headings and descriptions so they will be more appealing to anyone seeing my site on a search.
Sounds like a good idea, right? After all, I was impatient for more success.
Well yes, but then I made a crucial error. On the 20th of January, just into my 5th month, I changed the meta headings and descriptions to ALL of my posts 70 in total). ALL ON THE SAME DAY!!!
**BIG MISTAKE!!! I didn't know it at the time until the 4th of February, when suddenly, my impressions, which by the way had been increasing almost daily to well over 1,100, suddenly dropped to 0, overnight. Yes ZERO!!!
I had tried to do too much too quickly to old posts.
The Moral of this Story (to those who need to know)
If you are thinking of making any major changes to old posts, DO NOT make changes to more than a couple at any one time.
In fact, the lesson I am taking from this is to not worry too much about old posts, just create new and better posts. Google and all the other search engines like the activity anyway.
The Good News
There is a little good news, and maybe I will include this in subsequent reports. My impression and click rate are improving on Bing and Yahoo.
Conclusion
Please don't take this as a negative post. It has hurt me and set me back. But then Kyle's timely blog about Bisons came and reminded me we will always face hurdles and setbacks. The best thing we can do is to push on through.

Over to You
So, what mistakes have you guys made in the past that seemed painful at the time? What did you do about it and how long did it take you to recover?
Comment below because we can all learn from each other here.

That’s a great story, my mistake was in Wordpress, I did not understand how to get my Meta title right plus I did not have any summary. I had to go through the lessons at W.A again to start putting it into practice. I am still on the road to recovery.
I hope you are seeing that recovery now.
We have to understand we will make mistakes along the way. To think otherwise is delusional. The secret is to learn as we move forward, getting better and better as we go.
I am sure your results will come back stronger than ever, as will mine. It is just painful in the meantime, right?
Good luck, Michelle.
