You need to be able to keep traffic also. Are you struggling with this?
When I first started blogging four years ago, the first thing I did after every post was to find out ways how I could get traffic to it. I was really savage, like you have no idea. I've tried just about every trick in the book, and I'll tell you that nothing has rivalled slow consistent low-hanging-fruit building.
Keep an eye on your bounce rate
Previously I was never one for lasering in on whether people were staying on my site or not. The premise of my marketing plan was to get as many people to my site as possible through any means that I could. In my eyes my content was amazing, who wouldn't like what I wrote, right?
But I was wrong. Very wrong.
You see, when I eventually looked into why no-one was clicking on my links or engaging with my products I found out that people were staying on the site for a couple of moments and then clicking away again. My headings were good and people were interested enough to come in but why weren't they staying?
Burn this into your mind: Safety
You could have the most amazing information on your site, written in a way that the almighty himself had shone some of his divine inspiration on you -- but if when your visitors first join and they don't feel safe, they'll exit pretty quickly without reading anything.
You have around ten seconds to convince a reader that your website is safe to be on before they run away screaming. Make it count.
How to make it count?
Consistency is key: We're only going to be talking about aesthetics here but avoid overcomplicating your font sizes, names, and types. You really only need a heading type, and a paragraph type. That's it.
Don't keep changing the sizes and the styles throughout the paragraph. By doing so it will make the reader feel uncomfortable, and generally, your average reader is computer illiterate so they'll link that feeling of uncomfortableness to being unsafe, and then their mind will go to scam, run!
If your readers feel comfortable, great, onto the next part.
Keep it clean
There's a reason the main Google site is only a search bar and that's it. People are attracted to clean pages, and with less clutter. Less is more in this day and age. Trust me on this one. The less clutter you have on your site the better.
Why?
Well because this is the age of information. We've had to build really strong filters to filter out the clutter. If your page is stacked full of stuff then chances are your reader is going to miss it because they've "filtered" it out.
The most successful sites on the internet are clutterless and very smooth.
Avoid endless spamming your links
One thing that really gripes me when I read websites is being overloaded with ads. I rarely read mainstream news sites anymore because as soon as I hit their page I'm spammed with a video ad. I'm sure there are millions more like me. Remember! Clutterless. Your links and ads should be strategically put in a way that the reader isn't even alerted by them -- they should add to their experience and not hinder them
More advertisements and affiliate links does NOT mean there's more chance of a link click/buy -- it actually equates to less chance, and a more chance you'll lose a potential customer.
One tactic I use is creating one sales copy with my affiliate link on it, and have maybe four or five pages linking to it. That way there is a flow leading to that page but I'm not screaming in their face BUY NOW MAN GODDAMMIT! - think of how you would react to your site if it does this?
Anyway. I suck at ending posts so I'll just say that I hope you gained something from this! And good luck. We will all need it :)

Awesome advice. You really confirmed my thoughts on busy websites, I thought it was only me who hated them.
Now you tell me clean is best. I've been striving for that.
Wonderful post.

You'll be surprised! The only way people will read a whole page of clutter is if you have a reputation already. That's how mainstream media get away with it. Public trust = getting away with clutter.
For people like us? Keep it clean and smooth :)
I agree with all of that. I leave a page if an advert pops up immediately or soon after. If it pops up later and then keeps reappearing, that makes me leave too.
I have seen sites that are very cluttered with adverts down both sides and the content littered with ads, it is very off putting.
It is! That was my very first strategy. As many ads as I could manage. But my bounce rate was crazy haha. I had to do a lot of deep thinking about how I would react
