I am applying to be an affiliate with ebay and they asked me to verify my domain, but it returned an "invalid response code 404" message. I don't know what that means, but it doesn
hello. thank you for responding to my question. well, ebay sent me an email to verify my email address (which worked) and then to verify ownership of the website domain (which is what didn't work). they asked me to upload some HTML file to my website and then verify that it opened in my browser. all of this was to verify my domain.
i am currently researching about domain verification and it appears that my website isn't live until it has been verified? is that correct?
does Wealthy Affiliate have a blog or video tutorial about how to verify domains or something related to "getting your website live"? something like that?
again, thanks so much for your help.
Is not uncommon for other websites to ask you to verify the site. However, each site does it differently, for instance, Flex Offers asked me to verify mine by writing FLEX OFFERS in my website <head> and the way to do that is by going to your theme, editor, find the header and adding the verification method to the site. You will need to do that with webmaster tools as well.
First you need to ask Ebay how the method in which they want you to verify your site as there are several ways to do this process.
I hope this helps,
Manny
so just to clarify, on the wordpress dashboard, under the APPEARANCE tab, i should click on EDITOR. is that correct?
I had this issue and I was able to find a video somewhere...sorry, but I could not find the video. I did find this AND IT WORKED!

is it absolutely necessary to use Google Analytics to verify a website? if there's another way, i'd love to hear about it since Google Analytics is a paying service. if my website takes off and i start making a good profit, then i might consider using this method. until then, the expenditures are adding up and the profit is still 0. that's not to say that i don't think i can make money. i know i can. it's just that it hasn't happened yet, so i'm on a bit of a budget, u see.
oops. i meant Google Apps is a paying service. here's what the link says:
"If you use Google Analytics to track traffic to your domain's web site, you can verify your domain and activate Google Apps using your Analytics tracking code."
so this link wants me to sign up for Google Apps, which is free for the first 30 days, but then after that i have to pay.
Usually a 404 message means that the page they are trying to access is not available. Go look at your page and make sure is published and that you can see it when you search for it. Also, a lot of people make the mistake of adding the three w's to their site. The way WA is set up you don't need to list your site with the three W's instead something like this http://mywebsite.com not like this http://www.mywebsite.com. I'm not sure if that would cause the problem but when I was trying to work on my webmaster tool account it did give me some trouble so it's worth checking the links and changing if that is the problem.
