Is a Role Model better than a Mentor?

I have just written a post on http://tonypitwood.com/when-did-your-role-model-la... and it's set me to thinking . . . ❀◕ ‿ ◕❀

What would you do if you could not have both?

If you had to choose, which would you settle for? and why?

I know my choice . . . I'll share it later ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Mentor. A mentor you have personal contact with. Personally I have 4 generally based on the educational and professional thresholds that I have passed.

Top of the morning to you, IZ,
Thanks for your thoughts
Have a great day
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hi Pitters,
No question a mentor, but before I picked, he/she would have be able to be considered a role model. Would I pick a slob for a mentor?

Top of the morning to you, Dick,
So droll ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Some might consider Homer Simpson for the job ) ᵔᴥᵔ (

Hmmmm Hiii Tony!

I like the idea of a mentor rather than a role model...If I had to choose one only...

It is better for me to hear the down and dirty of what i am screwing up (even if that may not feel very good at the moment!) rather than having a likely "from a distance" role model that may or may not be able or willing to tell me this....

Actually I am thinking of bringing on a mentor now...It just makes sense, I have had them in past lives (meaning businesses or jobs/positions)...Online marketing is no different (except they cost more?)...

Your question got me thinking back on some of the best mentors and role models I have had in the past...The best ones that stand out served both roles...They were models of what I was striving for, and had the time to give me mentoring/straight guidance (good and bad)...

How is that for riding the fence lol!! Have a great day/evening!!!

Cheers and a tip of the scotch to you!

Dave : )

Top of the morning to you, Dave me bhoy! ) ᵔᴥᵔ (
I suppose you have included fence-riding in your list of Olympic medals you are chasing ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I would choose a mentor because they can be both a role model and a mentor whereas a role model could say your older brother.

Mentors teach you how to succeed based on their experiences where as role models are just someone you look up to, you might not even know them, but you would know your mentor because you speak to them.

Sorry if this seems all jumbled up, but that's my opinion.

A mentor would be better for a person that a role model since a mentor could fill in both areas.

Top of the morning to you, Anthony,
Lovely answer - amazing how we are all so different . . . and yet surprisingly similar ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yes, I would do what Mark said. A mentor is there to help and guide you. They would be there to help me choose the right buttons and direct me to the right locations to find information I needed.

Want to be my mentor??????????

Lora.

Top of the morning to you, Lora,
With pleasure - anyway I can be of help . . . ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Thank you?
You are SOOOOOOO NICE!

Lora

Hi - a role model is fine, but imo they won't challenge you.

A mentor on the other hand, is there to pick you up, steer you, challenge you until you get to the point where they can do no more for you.

Therefore I would always choose a mentor - they would have a better chance of getting me to produce the work and output needed to succeed.

All the best, Mark

Top of the morning to you, Mark,
I agree wholeheartedly with you - mind you, Role Models do play a Role (hohoho)
Have a great day ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Hi Tony - I knew from you asking the question, that you were clear that both were separate roles, and that you were prompting a debate. I also (I believe) correctly assumed you thought mentors had a more prominent role in success.

My role model (in one aspect) is Vince Clarke (Yazoo/Yazz/Assembly/Erasure) - a song writer, a programmer, a perfectionist, a dad - but he doesn't know me from anyone of a number of hundreds of thousands of other people.

My mentor in my 9-5 is directly in touch with me, challenging me, motivating me, pushing me - knows what my pain points are, knows what I can do to achieve more.

I would like to have accomplished what Vince Clarke has musically.

My mentor is hell-bent on me achieving what I can within our mutual environment.

There is a big difference I think - I'll still always aspire to be a successful musician - but I don't have a mentor in that arena - I will be successful in my 9-5 - I have a mentor who will push me to the edge to achieve it.

I would love to have a mentor in the online marketing space - so to me, a mentor and a role model have two very distinctive, and separate roles.

Cheers, Mark

Top of the morning to you, Mark,
If you don't mind, I think I'm going to steal your description for me to use elsewhere . . . you've done such a good job painting the picture in graphic detail ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'd be honoured :)

Cheers, Mark

I like your website. It is inspiring and challenging. Yes, I prefer to be both.....and I think it is achievable....just my thoughts!

Thank you, dear one, for your kind thoughts (^_^ )
You can certainly be both if you simply share what you have and what you are with others ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
