My Hip Revision

As some of my WA friends are aware, I'll be out of action for a while as I'm having hip revision surgery tomorrow, Thursday March 31.

I have 2 hip replacements, 5 years apart. The older of the two, which was supposed to last 10-15 years, is having its 21st this year.

(I thought of throwing it a surprise party, but then realized that wasn't going to work.)

Anyway, it's definitely at end of life, so it's being replaced tomorrow.

That's what they call the "revision" operation. It's a lot more complex than the original as it includes removal of the old prosthetic, cleaning up the site, drilling the whole deeper and so on.

An original hip replacement op takes around 2 hours but the revision takes between 4 and 6.

I admit to being a bit aprehensive, especially around the logistics of recovery.

I'll be taking a laptop in with me, so am hopeful of reconnecting with WA as soon as possible.

All the best to everyone,

Phil

Phil, best of luck with your surgery! I have worked in surgery for many years, with orthopedics as my specialty for a lot of that time. The revision implants have come a long way in the last 20 years, as has the technology going along with them!
I'm sure you are in greatly skilled hands!

I'm still in the ICU but should go to my room tonight (Friday) or tomorrow morning. Thank you for your interest and good wishes.

Thank you for your good wishes. Sorry about this boilerplate response but I just don’t have the energy (because of the pain-killer regime, I think) to type individual responses. But in summary, the operation appeared to go well (all 5 and a half hours of it) I was in the ICU for a couple of days and am now in my own room while learning to walk again. I’ve just graduated from walking frame to crutches and will probably stay in hospital for a few more days to gain enough ability and confidence to tackle the 2 flights of stairs up to my unit at home. I’m overwhelmed by the support I’ve received from my WA friends and am looking forward to contributing again in the near future.

Oh, gosh, not fun. Hope all goes well for you.

I've had one hip and two knees replaced. Now my right shoulder is bone on bone but not getting any more surgeries because the three I had amped up a barely noticeable murmur into mild heart disease. Instead, using the anti-inflammatory diet, which quells the pain.

Dang -- so sorry you have to go through all that. Will be thinking of you and wishing you a successful surgery.

I had one done about 9 years ago. I was hoping to NOT deal with it ever again. That's probably very optimistic on my part though isn't it?

You'll have to keep us posted on your progress. I don't like your comment about it taking much longer. That worries me.

I wish you the best and a speedy recovery!!!!!!!!

Great news!!!! Thanks for the update.

Hey Phil,

I kinda can relate to that.
My mom has also both hip replacements... It was I believe in 2014. A few years later, both shoulder joints replaced.
And on top of it spine surgery.

She is fine though.

Well I am sure you will get better afer the op, pretty quick.

Sending positive, healthy recovery vibes your way!
Mike

Thanks for your good wishes, Mike. Your Mom sounds pretty amazing.

Good morning Phil,

I'm sorry that you need another hip replacement, however, on the bright side, it sounds like your hip replacement has done well! I also believe that you are very active, so I guess I must have been quite a bit of wear and tear.

I wish you well with your operation and hope that you make a really speedy recovery. I'm glad that you're taking a laptop! I believe by focusing on your web business and Wealthy Affiliate will help to make the recovery much quicker. And in turn, help to stop you think about any discomfort from the operation.

Wishing you all the best and I look forward to seeing you posting again very soon.

Roy

Thanks, Roy. We'll just have to see how long it takes for the brain fog to clear and the pain to recede enough to post on WA again.

I do understand Phil, let's hope that the brain fog and your recovery period goes quicker than you could ever imagine! I hope to see you posting again very soon.

All the best.

Roy

Good morning Phil,

Well done that's great news, the fact that you've been able to write a comment suggests something good! I'm really pleased that everything seems to have gone well. I hope and pray that you make an unbelievable speedy recovery.

I look forward to hearing more soon, have a fantastic day.

Roy

Thanks, Roy. It's a bit awkward with the laptop in an ICU bed. I'll be glad to get into my own room.
