Back on the Bike at Last!
A Major Milestone
So yesterday I got back on the bike, roughly 8 weeks after getting my new hip.
It's a milestone I've been looking forward to, though perhaps a little nervously.
Here are the other milestones making up the journey.
1. Getting assisted out of bed and onto a walking frame: the day after surgery.
2. Getting out of bed and making it to the bathroom unassisted: a couple of days after surgery.
3. Trading in the walking frame for crutches: three days after surgery.
4. Walking around the ward on crutches: four days after surgery.
5. Going up and down stairs on crutches: five days after surgery.
6. Ditching one crutch: a week after surgery.
7. Going home: 8 days after surgery.
8. Getting in and out of bed without using my hands to lift the leg.
9. Supermarket shopping on one crutch.
10. Ditching the crutch and walking without it. In boat shoes with no socks.
11. Getting dressed without having to lie down.
12. Putting on shoes with socks and laces. This one is huge!
13. Walking 10,000+ steps in a day.
14. Riding the bike again.
These images aren't contemporary. They are from past 100km rides.
But not too long ago and I hope to do another before the end of the year.
Anyway, that's my new hip recovery so far.

Great progress. It must feel great to be back on the bike again.
Where is the top picture, it reminds me of the southern beaches before Wollongong, NSW. Probably completely wrong though.

You're not wrong, Stephen. That was on the Gong ride, 100 km between Sydney and Wollongong. Took a bit over 3 hours.
I use to live in Bundeena, that little community in the Royal National Park. I lived there for about 15 years.
You must have ridden your bike down from the Bulli tops. That is steep and pretty twisty, you would not want to take a tumble.
But I have fond memories of living there.
Are used to do spartan races and now I don’t do anything so you really inspired me and I have a gym downstairs at my house you UGH! However my job just ended yesterday so I will have some spare time I need to get off my butt.

That's GREAT to hear, Phil! 👍👍
You look fabulous on that bike, even if they are photos from a prior race!
Just thinking about biking 100KM makes me tired!
What place did you come in for that ride?
I have almost the same skeleton shirt, except that it has the name of a drug company on it that sells osteoporosis meds. 😊

Thanks, Frank. These are group rides (attracting thousands of riders) not races. But having said that, any two riders on good bikes are always in (friendly) competition. I usually finish in the top 100 over the line.
