Times are tough and the economic slowdown that has occured due to Covid has made it so much more difficult financially. With so few opportunities to immediatley make money we often have to resort at looking at reducing our expenses.

Take a look at some strategies that you may want to reconsider or try out for the first time.

1) Check and cancel your subscriptions

I remember signing up as a member to a baby site with a small monthly fee of $3.98 which came out my credit card. Due to my own negligence I only just realized 13 years later that it was still coming out. So please don't be like me and check and cancel those subscriptions. .

2) Make a list and make one trip

How often guys have you gone out and forgot that you were supposed to get a couple additional items from the store? If you made a list this would not happen and you would save a couple gas dollars. Not to mention you would avoid pissing off your wife.

3) Cancel your gym membership

Yes, it pays to be healthy, but if you’re only going to the gym once every couple weeks for the treadmill, consider canceling your membership and going on a run. There are also plenty of at-home workouts that cost nothing – some fitness classes are even recorded on YouTube

4) Cut cable

Cable can be so expensive particularly if you have an above basic package. Might be an idea to switch to streaming utilizing services similar to a Fire Stick or Roku box,

5) DIY (Do it Yourself) Repair

Instead of hiring a tradesman (sorry Jeff) try to attend to household maintenance and repairs as far as is possible. The University of YouTube is an excellent resource to guide you numerous home related projects. Of course if you have to hire a licensed contractor please do.

6) Ask for discounts

If you are a senior citizen, a member of a savings club, a veteran, a student there are discounts that you may be able to access. Not every store might advertise that they do offer discounts so go ahead, don't be shy and ask.

7) Shop after the holidays

Typically after a major holiday the items will go on sale or be sent to the clearance rack. This is the time if you can to actually buy and save. Even if it may be a year early you will benefit from the cost savings are likely to be upwards of 40% and the peace of mind that you will not have to fight with the crowds next year.

8) Buy Generic and do it in bulk

Do you really need to buy brand named products? The quality is often not substantially different that the generic items. So it may be the right time to reconsider the no name brands. Further, by buying your items in bulk you might be able to access additional savings. If the quantity is too much then head over to the store wiht a friend or another member of your family so that you can split up that bulk package later.

Take care,

Hugh

Hi Hugh, that is a lesson for a person who just starting to join the club (married life) :) :) :) mostly just want to be remind it what to do and point it out for them! Stick to the plan with your partner also good, without the approval of the other, don't go behind and you will not get nailed for months and months goes by:)

For sure you know what i mean Hugh,

cheers,
joce

Hi Hugh,

You have shared some important saving tips! Greatly appreciated! That 13 year forgotten subscription had it been in a saving account instead, even at a minimal interest rate, would have amounted to something valuable today. You live and you learn!

Have a wonderful day! Wishing you the very best!

Kind regards,
Nichola

Yeah I need two taps for allowing that to linger on for so long.

Some great tips in there, Hugh :-) Another is coffee. If you a cup of coffee every day, you can easily save a couple of bucks every day, and make coffee at home to take away instead.

With a price for coffee around 3 to 4 dollars that can be 2 dollars save for each cup of coffee per day. That adds up to $2x30= $60 per month for just one cup of coffee!

Roy

Very true Roy. A close look at what you buy outside the home could reveal several items which you can make at home

I like your post, Hugh. I’m always looking for ways to save money.

One thing I do is look for sales in grocery ads on things I always buy, especially ground chuck.

Lynn

We don't have coupons here as much as in the US and UK. But also an excellent way to save.

Yes very true Terry we have a similar branch of AAA here. I don't use them but insurance and roadside can be very beneficial. The thing is that you question paying the extra but if an accident happens you are deeply relieved.
