Amazon phone number verification issues
After struggling for two weeks with numerous attempts to verify my European phone number with Amazon (mission impossible) I found a way to resolve this issue.
You simply create an account with Sonatel (or some other provider) and choose their 5-day free trial option. You will get a USA phone number that you can enter and recieve the phone call from Amazon. They will ask you to enter the 4-digit code that they generate on your computer screen as soon as you press "call now", and your phone number will be verified.
Don't forget to check "I agree with the terms.. " before you continue!

Nevertheless there are some problems with the phone (or network) connections between US and my country - Latvia. tried Sonatel, but from six attempts to send me the verification code I got one which at that moment was already old. Sonatel tried to call me one time, but the call didn't come through.
Will keep on trying. Thanks one more time for the hint!
