How to Strengthen the Mind?

Quote of the Day:

“Difficulties strengthen the mind, just as labor does the body.” Seneca

Meaning of the Quote:

Difficulties build the muscles of the mind, just as labor builds the muscles of the body.

Discussion of the Quote:

Difficulties force the mind to get stronger. They make the mind work harder to come up with solutions for the difficulties that it is encountering. In the same way, labor of any kind such as physical work, exercise, play, sports, walking, dancing or any form of movement all strengthen the body.

More importantly, when the mind is experiencing difficulties, the pain of those difficulties forces the mind to find solutions so that it can overcome those difficulties and in doing this create growth which results in the elimination of the pain and the solutions to the difficulties.

Consequently, the mind gets stretched and pulled by the difficulties it encounters and this process brings about changes and those changes create growth in the strengthening process.

Final Thoughts:

Not only solving our problems helps to strengthen the mind, things like math games, word search, crossword puzzles are all great workouts for the mind that result in strengthening it.

Hard projects force the mind to think outside of the box and force us to step out of our comfort zone so that we can find the solutions in order to complete the project. By the end of the project, our minds have been changed because we had no other choice but to build up our mental muscles so that we can get the project done.

I appreciate your time, comments and likes.

To our success

Kind regards,

Nichola

Nicole that is an interesting quote that is very true. I think even though we may hate encountering difficulties we can all relate.

If we can see our problems as things that are just there to take us to a new level we may actually learn to appreciate them more.

In Guyana, we say, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." I think it's pretty much the same.

A nice thought to start the day.

Have a blessed one.

Hi Nichola
I agree with you (using my own words) that exercising the brain (thinking and above all learning new things) increases the connections between neurones in the brain which is the same as saying the brain function is strengthened. This is backed by science.

In addition, when we exercise our muscles the brain generates new cells which are distributed appropriately around the body. If we are learning new things at the same time (it doesn’t matter what but hopefully useful) then the effect of neuroplasticity can increase the size of our brain (we develop new understanding and function).

Personally I prefer to replace the words “problem” and “difficulty” with “challenge”.

The words problem and difficulty indicate a mindset that accepts the negative connotations of those words.

A challenge on the other hand implies a mindset that believes there’s a way to overcome and move on.
